Handbook of Functional Neuroimaging of Cognition, 2nd Edition (Cognitive Neuroscience)

Product Description

This essential resource on neuroimaging provides an accessible and user-friendly introduction to the field written by leading researchers. The book describes theoretical and methodological developments in the use of functional neuroimaging techniques to study the neural basis of cognition, from early scientific efforts to link brain and behavior to the latest applications of fMRI and PET methods. The core of the book covers fMRI and PET studies in specific domains: attention, skill learning, semantic memory, language, episodic memory, working memory, and executive functions. By introducing a technique within the description of a domain, the book offers a clear explanation of the process while highlighting its biological context. The emphasis on readability makes Handbook of Functional Neuroimaging of Cognition ideal for classroom use in advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in cognitive neuroscience.

This second edition has been completely updated to reflect new developments in the field, with existing chapters rewritten and new chapters added to each section. The section on history and methods now includes a chapter on the crucial topic of the physics of functional neuroimaging; the chapters on skill learning and executive functions are new to the domain section; and chapters on childhood development and emotion and social cognition have been added to the section on developmental, social, and clinical applications. The color insert has been increased in size, enhancing the visual display of representative findings.

Review
"The revised Handbook is an extraordinarily valuable resource for psychologists, neuroscientists, and all others interested in the ways that neuroimaging is illuminating the relation between mind and brain. An enormous amount of ground is covered in these articles, and they provide a systematic review and integration of the field. Students, teachers, and researchers in many fields have a lot to gain from the rich overview of theory and findings in these pages."
--Stephen M. Kosslyn, John Lindsley Professor of Psychology in Memory of William James, Harvard University

"The second edition of this book is even better than the first. The contributions are first rate and provide an excellent survey of current research on functional neuroimaging of cognition while capturing the excitement of new developments. It is an ideal text to use in upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses, and a must for researchers in cognitive neuroscience."

Excellent & comprehensive intro5
This is an excellent book, focusing on fMRI and PET, that goes over in detail methodology and applications. The methodology sections includes details on the underlying physiology (it's more complicated than just blood flow and 02 extraction)and critiques the commonly used subtraction method, preferring instead event-evoked studies. Going beyond the simplistic concepts of areas "lighting up" being "for" this or that cognitive function, there is coverage of network analysis. The methodology is obviously still in an early evolutionary phase, and each chapter has closing section on controversies and future directions. The application sections cover neuroimaging of attention, visual recognition, semantic, episodic and working memory, and language. There is good critical review of the literature here, and there is no tendency towards oversimplification of conflicting results. There is also a chapter on cognitive aging that I found particularly informative, showing how the elderly utilize different neural networks than younger people to perform various cognitive tasks. The book is about 400 pages and includes 22 color plates. This is a very rich and rapidly evolving research area, and I think this is a great intro book for clinicians in neurology, psychology and psychiatry, as well as neuroradiology, to get an appreciation of what just a few years ago was a science fiction concept...taking pictures of the mind as it thinks.

Gold standard5
As an ER PA this is the gold standard to start with. Rosens is much more detailed but is too much to start with. I've found most everything I need is in this text.

Emergency Medicine: Comprehensive Study Guide 6th edition5
This book is a must. Its useful for any person who practice in the ER as well the outpatient. Is very good for general reference. The book give a review of the problem with a management oriented to the adequate level of care. Cover
every topics (trauma, pediatric, adult, ob/gyn, surgery). Is easy to read and well explain.

This book is an excellent learning tool!4
This book is a great textbook of emergency medicine, and I've chosen it over others simply because it's comprehensive without the useless drivel. Each section includes the necessary anatomy and pathophysiological considerations for the respective disoders. The subset of conditions are mentioned with just enough facts to understand the morbidity to treat it. The pictures, diagrams, algorithmic flow-charts, and drug regimens are a nice compliment, however, most of your clinical experience is going to come from interships and residency, so to assume this book is all you'll need to get by in EM is crazy. I still think it's the best out there to read before putting your mind to work.

Brain Repair

Product Description

Sixty years ago, the Nobel laureate Santiago Ramon y Cajal stated that "in the adult brain, nervous pathways are fixed and immutable; everything may die, nothing may be regenerated." Cajal's influence has been legendary--and conventional wisdom still holds that the human brain cannot repair
itself. Today, however, remarkable discoveries from laboratories around the world offer a much more optimistic prognosis. In Brain Repair, three internationally renowned neuroscientists team up to offer an intriguing and up-to-the-minute introduction to the explosive advances being made in the
research, technology, and treatment of brain damage.
The key to neuroscience's most exciting discoveries to date is a theory that is rapidly gaining adherents in the scientific community--the theory of neuroplasticity. Unlike the prevalent notion that mental processes--like seeing, remembering, and speaking--take place only within highly specialized
brain regions made up of irreplaceable and non-regenerating cells, neuroplasticity stresses that cells throughout the brain can not only regenerate, but can adapt their function to assume critical roles once performed by damaged tissue. In clear, accessible language, the authors show us that the
brain manufactures a host of complex chemicals that actually foster growth in damaged brain cells. We visit the laboratories where researchers are untangling the mystery of Parkinson's disease and trying to understand what goes wrong in stroke victims, and why some, thought permanently impaired,
show remarkable improvements. In addition, they discuss how even today misguided ideas can adversely affect how physicians treat patients--for example, they describe common drug treatments given to stroke and head trauma patients that can actually worsen the effects of brain damage. And, along the
way, they detail the fascinating history of how brain structure and functioning has been understood and studied, from prehistoric times to the present.
Over a half million people each year suffer brain-damaging injuries and diseases--but the outlook for their eventual recovery is far more hopeful than it was just a short while ago. A best-selling volume in France and Mexico, Brain Repair provides a vividly written, wide-ranging look at the leading
edge of one of science's most exciting frontiers.

From Booklist
Justifiable optimism is the theme of this carefully thought-out, clearly written book. Stein and his colleagues survey the growth of knowledge about the brain, its injuries and diseases; examine current approaches to the repair of those traumas and the rehabilitation and retraining of their sufferers; and discuss procedures of examination and diagnosis. Emphasizing Nobel laureate Santiago Ramon y Cajal's refusal to consider brain regeneration as a possibility, they show how this attitude has limited the possibilities for innovative research and treatment; many years of poor communication between laboratory researchers and practicing clinicians have compounded that situation. Citing specific examples of diseases and trauma, the authors show how vital psychosocial factors are for both the present and the future of successful treatment. Professional and lay readers alike should ponder this pioneering book. William Beatty

Midwest Book Review
Doctors are commonly taught that brain damage is irreversible: the authors maintain that brain cells can regenerate, and can adapt to compensate for damage. Chapters explore new advancements in brain research and the treatment of brain damage, offering hope based on new theories of recovery.

Too confusing
The immunology section of this book is the most convoluted reading I have had in all my readings for the step 1. Frankly, the figures are far superior in explaining what the author is trying to convey. Maybe this book was helpful for others but it just frustrated me and did not expand any more than what was already more concisely described in first aid. Bottom line, not worth the time.

execllent
the immunlogy section is extra ordinary with concise yet comprehensive ! it simplified not only for usmle but also for medical carrier, so it should study first before the other topics.
I think the book needs more thorough answers for usmle questions as most of us purchase for usmle reviews not for text !

Almost excellent
I love this book but the reason i gave this book 4 stars is just because they didn't bother to correct some mistakes of the seventh edition. In this edition (eighth), on page 41 (Chapter 7) Botton note says: Pseudomonas aeruginosa {endotoxin} has the same mode of action. Refering to Diphtheria toxin. It should be {exotoxin}. Another example (to show you a few) is in the same chapter on page 43 table 7-13, it says:
Nervous system
Gram-positive rods:
Clostridium tetani>>>>inhibit acetylcholine release
Clostridium botulinum>>>>inhibit glycine release
As you can see they are mismatched.
So this book is almost perfect, excellent contents but with a few mistakes in some concepts.

Heart Disease is Nothing to Brag About5
Having experienced heart disease first-hand in three close relatives, and seeing the crippling effects of this debilitating disease (taking lots of medicines and their side effects), I thought I knew everything about the disease, particularly the treatment side - the drugs, the surgeries, the stents. But I didn't know that much about the prevention side, and that is what this book is all about. How to prevent it.

I was curious about what the authors Paul and Patricia Bragg had to say about preventing heart disease. So I bought this easy to read book, and have learned quite a bit from it. It is packed with plenty of practical advice, including facts about heart disease and longevity. As I read the topics on stress, exercise, different studies and vitamins, I realized that this book was more than a book on cardiovascular fitness. It was a wonderful book that encompassed a healthy way of life, that anyone could utilize. This book is for everyone, not just heart patients.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book, particularly the fasting for a day. This is a not a new concept for me - fasting. However, the type of fast that is described - an 8-10 glass water fast, with 3 glasses water with vinegar and honey, was intriguing. They explained that during the fast, toxins will be released from the body, and people will experience such things as headaches, diarrhea, etc. but that it will go away over time. I I especially liked it when they stated that the cholesterol will drop as a result of the fasting. So I tried the fast, and I tested my cholesterol. To my amazement, my cholesterol (which is typically borderline) was around 173. I will try it once more in the future to verify the findings.

Although I agreed with most of the material in the book, there is one section that I defer on - the authors tout that distilled water is the best water to drink. I personally like reverse osmosis water because it is more effective and removes even more chemicals than does distilled water.

Finally, one interesting story I liked was when Paul Bragg taveled the world looking for centenearians, and found a man in Turkey who was 154 years old and still working as a baggage porter. He was healthy and his simple diet consisted of dates, olives, day old black bread, garlic, vegetables and tea.

This book is definately worth reading and I recommend it highly.

Easy-to-follow, heart healthy lifestyle changes5
Paul and Patricia Bragg effective collaborate in Healthy Heart: Keep Your Cardiovascular System Health & Fit At Any Age to provide detailed reasons underlying cardiovascular disease. They use graphics, charts, and headlined sections to prove useful information in an easy-to-rad format specifically suited to the needs of the non-specialist general reader. Included in this highly recommended compendium of cardiovascular advice and information are easy-to-follow, heart healthy lifestyle changes, exercises, and diet information that if consistently applied will result in a dramatically improved cardiovascular performance and physical health.

You Have Just One Pump5
Healthy Heart describes how specific diet and exercise will keep your heart working longer. To see what this book covers, see the Table of Contents on the bar to your left.

Do not be confused by the low price on this book. Health Science prints in such large quantities, they can afford to keep their prices low. Millions of copies of Bragg books are in print.

Paul Bragg started the health food movement. His Daughter, the Amazing Patricia Bragg, is accelerating their tradition of promoting the healthy lifestyle. She publishes a number of health-nutrition books and markets her own brand of apple cider vinegar, olive oil and aminos. See her picture on the bottles.

I have known Health Science and Patricia Bragg and have followed her healthy lifestyle program for over 20 years.

Neuroscience: 4th ed.
It was good, but required for med school. So I don't know if any other text books would be better

Excellent text for medical school.
This is a great text for medical school courses. I use this in conjunction with the Blumenfeld text, and between these two texts I feel I am well prepared for most of the questions on the exam. The figures are particularly helpful, seeing as many of the professors use them directly in their powerpoint presentations.

Hard to follow
This book is a really tough read. I know neuroscience probably isn't supposed to be an easy read, but the author jumps all over the place. The chapters are divided up into broad sections with long heading names that don't always imply what the section is about. There are no subheadings or lists, just block text and pictures, making it difficult to outline the book in your notes. There are boxes about pathologies thrown in randomly throughout the chapter, but because the box begins when you are in the middle of a sentence about something completely different I'm rarely drawn to read them. For the most part the pictures and diagrams are clear, but when I study from this book I have to supplement with my general anatomy and physiolgy book. On several occasions the text has referred to parts of the anatomy that aren't labeled on the diagram. Not my favorite textbook...
