I like this5
Scientists & academics have spent entire careers investigating what makes people happy. But hidden in obscure scholarly journals & reports, their research is all too often inaccessible to ordinary people. At last, social scientist & psychologist David Niven, Ph.D., distills the scientific gobbledygook of over a a thousand of the most compelling & important studies on happiness into easy-to-digest nuggets of advice. Each of the hundred practices, attitudes, & habits for happiness is illustrated with a clear example & illuminated by a straightforward explanation of the science behind it to show you how to transform a ho-hum existence into a full & happy life.
Here It Is, What Are You Going To Do With It?5
This is a great book for anyone aspiring to heighten his or her level of happiness. It's a book that challenges the spirit, and asks the question; are you ready to jump into a life of happiness, or do you just want to sit on the sidelines? Several times while reading I felt convicted that I wasn't trying my hardest to be happy, when I was finished I felt like I knew what I could to become happier. This compilation of shorts is like a 365-day calendar, everyday a new page to gain inspiration from.
In my opinion it was an awesome anthology. The book was filled with short stories, research facts, and quotes to live by. It gave me an opportunity; happiness is in our lives we just have to reach out and grab it. I felt supported by a few of the stories I read throughout. There was a piece about religion and how you should never let your religious beliefs fade. There are always people out there trying to bring down someone's religious beliefs, this made me feel like I had someone else on my side.
The book fit into my life. It had the same type of facts in the book as there are in my life. There was another story that talked about being aggressive with your family or friends. Like arguing or just not expressing your feelings how you really feel or want to. Some of my friends tend to be aggressive and I feel like it puts up a barrier between us. When I read this it gave me insight on how to deal with these situations.

Amazon.com Review
Everyone loves a good fable, and this is certainly one. The protagonist is Julian Mantle, a high-profile attorney with a whacked-out schedule and a shameful set of spiritual priorities. Of course it takes a crisis (heart attack) to give Mantle pause. And pause he does--suddenly selling all his beloved possessions to trek India in pursuit of a meaningful existence. The Himalayan gurus along the way give simple advice, such as, "What lies behind you and what lies before you is nothing compared to what lies within you." Yet it is easy to forgive the story's simplicity because each kernel of wisdom is framed to address the persistent angst of Western white-collar professionals. --Gail Hudson

Best timeless self book ever5
If you ever need to read a self-help book, you only need to read this one.
Confirms God's word4
Its amazing that all of these books say the same thing the Bible says but people would rather trust a human for advice than their maker. I give this book 4 stars because it does follow the Bible. It may sound off the wall to some but that would depend on their desperation.
EXCELLENT5
I Had previously read the book and I loved it so much that I bought it from Amazon.com. It is an excellent book to have on your night table and a tool to implement good things into your life. Certainly brings you enlightment and help to improve your life!

Chicken Soup for Preteen Soul
Product Description
From remembering their own life experience or to watching their own children grow, most people recognize that the preteen years, ages nine to thirteen, can be one of the most awkward times in life-a period of tremendous physical and emotional change. At this age, youngsters are eager to leave the "kid" stage, yet are uncertain about what adolescence will bring; they'd rather listen to peers over parents, and hear all too often to "wait until you're older." Chicken Soup for the Preteen Soul will guide kids through this transition.
Written by and for preteens, this uplifting collection of stories touches on the emotions and situations they experience every day: making and losing friends, fitting in while keeping their personal identity, discovering the opposite sex, dealing with pressures at school including violence, and coping with family issues such as divorce.
Chapters include: On Love, On Family, On Friendship, On Choices, On Changes, On Overcoming Obstacles, Eclectic Wisdom, Tough Stuff, Attitude and Perspective and Achieving Dreams. Contributors indclude: *NSYNC, Mia Hamm, Beverley Mitchell and Karl Malone.
Whether first-time Chicken Soup readers or "graduates" of the bestselling Kid's Soul book, preteens are sure to include this in their backpacks and book bags.

Amazon.com Review
Inspired by the many readers of Chicken Soup for the Kid's Soul (one of many in the Chicken Soup for the Soul series), the authors decided to reach out to young people at that incredibly confusing, exciting chapter of life, the preteen years. Readers between the ages of 9 and 12 (give or take a year) sometimes felt that the book for kids was too young, while the edition for teens (Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul) was too old. In this warm, supportive anthology of true stories by and about preteens, the very issues that seem so complicated and insurmountable are addressed with intelligence and openness. Divorce, violence, death, friendships, school, family, attitudes, changes, dreams... preteens have a lot to offer and a lot to learn on these subjects. Many of the brief essays, cartoons, quotations, and introductions are witty as well as wise and touching; readers might devour the book from start to finish, drop in for a story here and there, or focus on a concern that is most important at the moment. The preteen years seem to be the perfect time to reach kids, before they are lost in teen angst and coolness. And who better to learn from than their own peers? For some added incentive to read, celebrities such as Mia Hamm, Karl Malone, and 'N Sync have contributed essays as well. (Ages 9 to 13) --Emilie Coulter
From School Library Journal
Gr 5-7-Like other titles in the "Chicken Soup" series, this volume contains numerous short pieces of verse and prose, interspersed with comic strips of "Calvin & Hobbes," "Family Circus," and "Dennis the Menace," as well as pithy quotations selected as lead-ins to some of the pieces. The writings are grouped under headings such as "Achieving Dreams," "Overcoming Obstacles," "On Choices," and "Eclectic Wisdom" (for the bits that didn't fit elsewhere?). They are intended to encourage, inspire, and comfort. Each of the stories carries an author's name, and those written by young people give an age as well. Snail mail and e-mail addresses are included for those who want to respond to the book or submit stories and poems of their own. Children who loved Chicken Soup for the Kid's Soul (Health Communications, 1998) will no doubt welcome another serving.-Elaine Fort Weischedel, Franklin Public Library, MA

Good stories to read with your preteen.5
It is sometimes hard to find things to do with your preteen. They are at an age when they want more independence from mom and dad. This book is a great connection - you can cozy up and read a few selections at a time - it's a great way to have fun, and spend time bonding with your preteen. You can then use the stories, or lessons learned for great conversation pieces for discussion.
really helpful!5
My parents are divorced and reading about how other kids dealt with it really helped me get back on my feet even though they've been divorced for like four years. Reading about how other kids got out of bad situations made me feel lucky because now I know how much worse they have it opposed to me. I know it's hard to deal with these things at first but too many kids dwell on how it stinks to have divorced parents and they don't use this time to try to do something to help yourself or something. If you want to make a difference get off your butt and try to make that difference.
Great book for young people and their parents.4
We just got this book and have been reading one story per day, right after dinner while we're still sitting at the table. The children love it and so do we. The real life stories are very inspiring and help the children focus the positive. Helps give them "can do" attitudes. Highly recommended for pre-teens.

From AudioFile
Jeff Woodman's excellent diction and gee-whiz tone are a good vehicle for this potentially life-saving material. He makes the often complicated material understandable without sounding condescending. The lesson itself from the tireless Dr. Perricone shows how diet and nutritional supplements can reduce the cellular aging process that causes sagging skin, clogged arteries, stiff joints, cancer, poor emotional functioning, and many neurological impairments. The key is preventing wild swings in blood sugar that cause inflammation and overstimulate hunger. As Perricone promotes natural and organic foods and warns against toxins, narrator Woodman moderates the tone of certainty enough to preserve the author's credibility. Printable recipes, menus, exercises, and other information are included. T.W. © AudioFile 2007, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

“There are a lot of things about Dr. Perricone’s science that really resonate with me. Here is one of them: growing up Italian has kept me in touch with the magical properties of olive oil. Dr. Perricone has taken this and others to a new level!”

My bible5
Full of good info to live by. The straight facts, clearly delivered. A must for anyone who plans to age gracefully.
Several significant inaccuracies scientifically2
I am a physician who has spent years studying anti-oxidants and supplements, and once upon a time, I believed much like Dr. Perricone. Alas, I found out the truth. There are no magic bullets, there are no magic supplements combinations that will keep you healthy. As Dr. Fuhrman states in his book, you cannot buy good health by buying pills, you have to earn it by eating a nutritionally dense, excellent diet all the time. As he points out, there are literally Tens of Thousands of nutrients in good vegetables, fruits, legumes (beans), seeds, nuts and berries. If you wanted to get all the good supplements that are known of today, you'd have to try to swallow a pill that would weigh about 3 pounds ! ! And, then you still would not be getting all the thousands of other nutrients that haven't even been discovered yet !! For your health and life's sake, don't waste your money on this man's supplements, read Dr. Fuhrman's Eat To Live, and his new book coming out in April, 2008 entitled Eat For Health. I am not Dr. Fuhrman, nor do I get anything out of promoting his book, other than the satisfaction of knowing I may be prolonging some of your lives, if you listen to me, and then to what he demonstrates are the true facts in his books. One of the other reviewers pointed out that Dr. Perricone doesn't seem to back up what he says with references to his sources. You will not find this to be a fault with Dr. Fuhrman's research. His book Eat To Live, has MORE than 1,000 scientific references in the back of the book, which are footnoted to specific statements in each chapter. I personally was skeptical of several things he said, and in fact, went out to find the original research in several cases where I most doubted what he said. I found that in every case, his research backed up what he said, and in one case, his summary of the evidence was more accurate than the researcher's own abstract of the research. I know of no one else who is so sincere in trying to find out accurate scientific information about diet, nutrition and health, and convey this to his patients. BTW, he's a Family Practice doctor who's Board Certified, and he treats whole people, not just their faces or their skin! Since my wife and I went on his diet we have never been sick (about 5 yrs now), and we both have much more energy. Back to Dr. P: he inaccurately tells people to use olive oil - which is unhealthy for you, even though it is less unhealthy than other oils. Also, research shows the reason the Mediterranean diet is healthy for you, is because of all the vegetables, and lettuce eaten, NOT because of the olive oil. He also promotes other findings as true that are not. To get your head on straight on the evidence, please read Dr. Fuhrman's books. Eat to Live: The Revolutionary Formula for Fast and Sustained Weight Loss

The Science of Getting Rich By Wallace D. Wattles
Product Description
As featured in the bestselling book The Secret, here is the landmark guide to wealth creation republished with the classic essay "How to Get What You Want."
Wallace D. Wattles spent a lifetime considering the laws of success as he found them in the work of the world's great philosophers. He then turned his life effort into this simple, slender book - a volume that he vowed could replace libraries of philosophy, spirituality, and self-help for the purpose of attaining one definite goal: a life of prosperity.
Wattles describes a definite science of wealth attraction, built on the foundation of one commanding idea: "There is a thinking stuff from which all things are made...A thought, in this substance, produces the thing that is imaged by the thought."
In his seventeen short, straight-to-the-point chapters, Wattles shows how to use this idea, how to overcome barriers to its application, and how work with very direct methods that awaken it in your life. He further explains how creation and not competition is the hidden key to wealth attraction, and how your power to get rich uplifts everyone around you.
The Science of Getting Rich concludes with Wattle's rare essay "How to Get Want You Want" - a brilliant refresher of his laws of wealth creation.

Wattless book, first published in 1910, jumps into the present with the help of Eliza Fosss hip reading. Her voice sounds youthful yet educated, relaxed yet firmly engaged with the core of the lesson. The writing of this era is a delight--confident, erudite, precise. The nonsectarian spiritual component will elevate listeners intentions and encourage their faith in the message. The author says that visualizing, thinking, and doing things in a certain way are the tools we need to create the abundant life we deserve. He is especially lucid regarding the correct use of the will, which should be used not to control others, but to direct our own thoughts and actions toward the future of wealth we desire. The Psychological Assessment of Political Leaders: With Profiles of Saddam Hussein and Bill Clinton
Product Description
In an age when world affairs are powerfully driven by personality, politics require an understanding of what motivates political leaders such as Hussein, Bush, Blair, and bin Laden. Through exacting case studies and the careful sifting of evidence, Jerrold Post and his team of contributors lay out an effective system of at-a-distance evaluation. Observations from political psychology, psycholinguistics and a range of other disciplines join forces to produce comprehensive political and psychological profiles, and a deeper understanding of the volatile influences of personality on global affairs.
Even in this age of free-flowing global information, capital, and people, sovereign states and boundaries remain the hallmark of the international order -- a fact which is especially clear from the events of September 11th and the War on Terrorism.
Jerrold M. Post, M.D., is Professor of Psychiatry, Political Psychology, and International Affairs, and Director of the Political Psychology Program at George Washington University. He is the founder of the CIA's Center for the Analysis of Personality and Political Behavior.

Trying to anticipate leaders next move5
If someone wants to know how many ways are available to assest traits of a leader personality this is the book to do so.
Curious Coupling4
Of all persons to be paired in a remote manner by psychological review, it's interesting that the author should explore the personalities of these two prominent persons while both are alive, and in theory, able to defend themselves. While Hussain may not have been available previously upon the initial writing, the fact that he is now in custody makes the analysis considerably more pertinent in view of recent news reports and discussion about what to do with him. While it is not the pairing that most would imagine could produce the height of contrast given the monstrous depiction of Hussain's crimes, the concept of evaluating the psychological profiles of leaders who wield such enormous power by their charisma as well as their position in world events is an admirable endeavor, and may well aid us in choosing talented leaders with great vision, and hence, great potential to either help or harm the world in due measure. Certainly, such a projection by perspective may lead to evaluation of other important figures in positions of influence, either in government or in business with decidedly greater opportunity to see where or by whom the nation is being guided, and in what direction. It may even prove useful for many in Congress who seek to leverage their positions of influence in certain directions, or who may use them to stall and thwart legislation recognized to be important or urgent. Could this pattern also apply to the Supreme Court to greatly increase the degree of scrutiny by which our "elected" leaders govern themselves? What a prospect! Imagine the secrets that would unfold given the nature of egos that inhabit our universe and where they seem to congregate and preside. These eyepopping examinations may provide entirely new perspectives and responsibilities when it comes to elections, giving us both foresight and more than a little hindsight. Surely, pairing these two between the covers of this anthology meets that criteria well.
Read This If You Want a True Insight into Saddam Hussein5
Like the first reviewer, I too watched Post on C-Span describing his studies and answering questions. Unlike the first reviewer, I was struck by Post's professionalism, wisdom and mastery of his subject. He was also, quite righly, unwilling to be drawn into political debate, although some questioners attempted to goad him into it by making outrageous statements of political fiction disguised as questions.
I feel the first reviewer is biased and even admits to not having read the book.
This is a book that should be read be every thinking person who has an interest in world conflict and how the psychological make- up of leaders effects the conduct of their policies and administrations.
His description of Saddam Hussein, compiled after years of meticulous research and interviews, shows how a miserable childhood combined with a specific psychological make-up can produce a "malignant narcissist", who is a danger to everyone around him. It shows that trying to "give him a chance to reform", is a policy that is bound to fail, because it will only fan his delusions further. SH is not, according to Post a madman but a calculating planner with clear goals and objectives. SH is also, it seems, a murderous sociopath.
This book is like having the play-book on SH. It enables us to understand what he does, why he does it and how he is likely to react to events and to the pressure brought to bear on him by military action. It enables one to gain an insight into events beyond the polemic of political debate.

Very well laid out introduction to the 4'th Way5
This is a great little book that offers a surprising amount of insight into the spiriual path. The book is written before Ouspensky published his book In Search of the Miraculous, which goes into much more detail, but this book has so many little gems that it is worth every penny spent. To me Ouspensky is more accessible than reading Gurdjieff directly and gives a very good overview of the 4'th way teaching.
The Wrong Path1
I don't see what purpose this book serves. Ouspensky is the greatest occult writer the modern world has produced, but this little book has nothing in it that isn't in In Search of the Miraculous; and in any event, the books by Ouspensky that matter are the ones that have nothing to do with Gurdjieff.
The Gurdjieff work is a hundred miles wide and one foot deep. Just deep enough for those who can't swim to drown in, as Ouspensky almost did. The work isn't without value; many of Gurdjieff's ideas are basically correct, but everything he knew can be found in superior form in other places. And all of Gurdjieff's ideas are distortions of things he got from other places. He wasn't sophisticated enough to tell the good from the bad, and he mixed wisdom and foolishness together in a salad of roughly equal parts. Much of what Gurdjieff taught, such as the necessity of group work or self-observation as endless toil, is the opposite of truth. Gurdjieff was a man who asked the right questions, but got all the answers wrong. Partly because he was a second-rate mystic with a second-rate mind, and partly because he was like all gurus: he had a deep-seated need to manipulate others and take financial advantage of them. I have seen his type repeatedly and known some of them personally. They are all the same. They take bits and pieces of other people's ideas and use them to impress the gullible. They have an amazing recall and ability to spout things they pick up here and there as if they are original.
Ouspensky was able to separate what little good there was in Gurdjieff from the little con man himself, and put it into his own superior version of the "Gurdjieff work" but grew too attached to the ideas before finally rejecting them for the ego-inflating trap they are.
It is Ouspensky's own work that is of serious interest, but really only parts of it, mainly his thinking on spatial dimensions. It is a tragedy of epic proportions that Ouspensky abandoned his real work for the shallow occultism of the dubious Gurdjieff, and it doesn't speak well of Ouspensky's more mystical side. But that isn't the side of Ouspensky that will stand the test of time.
To this day, his two books Tertium Organum and New Model of the Universe are at the cutting edge of human thought. They show the real direction that our conceptions of space and time should take, not the mathematically correct but logically ridiculous direction physics has taken. And yet, no doubt largely because of his association with the little Armenian con man, the enormous importance of Ouspensky's work is largely forgotten by all but a few.
Those two books show how to overcome the paradoxes of not just physics, but of philosophy. Nothing like them exists, or has ever existed. If you understand his ideas, their truth cannot be denied on any level. Unlike the endless double-bind prison that constitutes the "thought" of the "fourth way", the essays in those two books can change the way you perceive the world in the most fundamental way imaginable. But they are beyond both the reach and grasp of people with no more intelligence or common sense than occult disciples, which is why the people most likely to encounter them get very little from them.
To his eternally recurring credit, Ouspensky abandoned and renounced the Gurdjieff system late in life, realizing at last that it was a dead end, a dangerous distraction. It is ironic that Ouspensky is remembered mostly for his book on Gurdjieff, which is the least of his works and the very thing that keeps the Gurdjieff movement going. Indeed, much of the better stuff people tend to give Gurdjieff credit for was, in fact, Ouspensky all along. Without Ouspensky to make his ideas semi-coherent, there never would have been a Gurdjieff movement. It would have died with Gurdjieff.
In any event, it has been noticed by too few that many of the ideas credited to Gurdjieff, such as the antiquity of the Sphinx, for example, are mentioned in Ouspensky's books long before Gurdjieff professed them, in altered form, later on. And Gurdjieff himself said he would beg Ouspensky to be his teacher if Ouspensky "understood" his own books! From this we can gather that Gurdjieff read Ousepensky's early classics, admired them, and very likely appropriated many of Ouspensky's own ideas, only to regurgitate them back at their originator later on, as part of Gurdjieff's own admittedly "stolen" hodgepodge of ideas. No wonder Ouspensky was so impressed with him.
My recommendation is to read Ouspensky's two early classics, Tertium Organum and New Model of The Universe, and to stay away from Gurdjieff's poison until you are far enough advanced not be be seduced by it.
Which "I" is me?5
My first reading of this book was like a casting off of "dogmatic slumber" for me. Never had I read a work that laid out so very clearly and precisely what is required to work upon ourselves and begin to live intentionally in the world. This is not only the first book to provide someone interested in the Gurdjieffian 4th Way, it's a pivotal work for anyone demanding more of themselves and life than what is provided by alleged exoteric authorities. There are more tools for change in this small book than in many massive tomes offering similar tools for self growth and change. Highly recommended.

Artful Persuasion: How to Command Attention, Change Minds, and Influence People by Harry Mills
Product Description
Fresh insights and practical guidelines peel away the mystery behind the elusive art of persuasion.
There's really nothing mysterious about getting people to change their minds. No special, inborn gifts. No subliminal tricks. Instead, the best persuaders--advertisers, salespeople, politicians, spin doctors--depend on the fact that everyone responds to messages in just two ways: thoughtfully or mindlessly. And they know how to manipulate these two persuasion routes to make even the most doubtful say "yes."
Jam-packed with fascinating case studies and surprising examples, this comprehensive, entertaining how-to guide puts the powerful tool of persuasion at anyone's disposal. It explains: * How the master persuaders--the Churchills, Lincolns, and Roosevelts--create powerful, memorable messages that convince people of their arguments' logic and rightness * How successful persuaders exploit the psychological triggers that cause people to subconsciously move from "no" to "yes."

Entertaining & Valuable5
I never imagined a self-improvement book could be so entertaining. I literally couldn't pull myself away from this book, reading the entire book in one sitting!
Not having read the other "Influence" book recommended in Amazon's reviews, I can't objectively comment; however, I can say that "Artful Persuasion" is without question the most interesting and enjoyable of all self-improvement books I've read.
Knowledge Deployment 101 - 1034
Artful Persuasion is a compilation of tips, tricks and wisdom on how to persuade others, change their minds, align, and influence people favourably.
Just shy of 300 pages, Harry Mills introduces and expounds on the topic through chapters divided into 'Thoughtful Persuasion' (credibility, impressions, talking, asking targeted messaging. et cetra) and 'Mindless Influence' (contrast, reciprocation, consistency, authority, scarcity, conformity and liking). The book also features several quizzes, by-lines and diagrams to better illustrate the point. Oddly enough, the book ends with a chapter wherein an expected explanation on examples of influence and leadership goes awry and becomes a silly iconography of sorts.
That little biased narrative aside, Artful Persuasion is an informative book, even if it soon becomes apparent that there are no short cuts per se; just techniques that need to be learnt and practiced.
A bigger question, in the meanwhile, is the legitimacy of such techniques. You decide.
Good, yet lacking detail on some vital topics4
Like other books on the market, this book offers examples and case studies of successful professionals. Mills emphasizes the critical value of winning the attention of your audience or customer. Would like to have seen a bit more on developing the right verbal skills to permit one's message to be heard in a world where everything demands our attention.
Core Processes in Brief Psychodynamic Psychotherapy: Advancing Effective Practice
Product Description
Many students enter graduate programs with little or no experience of psychodynamic psychotherapy. Efforts to impart clinical skills have often been less than systematic and beginning psychotherapists have not always been encouraged to think about what they are doing and why they are doing it from a scientific standpoint.
Thoughtfully building on current debates over efficacy and effectiveness, this book outlines a promising approach to training in which the work of therapy is divided into tasks patterned after Luborsky's influential delineation of "curative factors"--significant developments in the course of the therapy that are crucial for effective change. Each task step for the therapist-cognitive, behavioral, affective, or a combination--is analyzed, taught separately, and then put in sequence with the other task steps. Curative factors have been extensively studied in recent years and the approach rests on a solid empirical base.
In a climate of increased accountability, clinicians must demonstrate that they are responding to providers' requests to conduct evidence-based practices. Core Processes in Brief Psychodynamic Psychotherapy will be an invaluable resource not only for students and trainees, but for established therapists who find themselves asked to justify their work.

From the Publisher
I took a road trip in January, drove from Dallas to New York City with one of my best friends. One problem we knew we would face was music. Where I tend to lean towards singers who hold a bottle of whiskey while singing, he enjoys the smooth sounds of R&B.
AudioBooks were the solution.
After listening to How to Read a Person Like a Book somewhere between Memphis and Nashville, every single gesture was analyzed, and in a small way, still is. And now I'm very conscious of what my body language is and I don't sit in meetings with my arms folded in front of me.

terrible book1
You would be better off googling "how to read body language" and reading a couple paragraphs. Most of it is common sense or can be found in any magazine article. Save your money.
Very good informations5
I wish I would have had this book a long time ago. It really helps to get an idea of what the other person is thinking when you are talking with them. I have learned to watch for tell tale signs now, and I know when to shut up or perhaps take a different approach.
How to Read a Person3
This book left me with mixed feelings. I've read other books on the same subject and the information is old but it still works. Like the other books this was a fast and easy read. Again it is very useful if you're in sales. Always a helpful tool to have. This book will get you started and sharpening your sales skills. Always good to know when you can sell someone and when to give up.

Heavy reading, but worth it.4
This is a more advanced strategy based bible for the busy trader and the mindset involved. I bought this one along with Trading in the Zone and found the two of them compliment each other quite nicely. He covers a wide range of philosophies from the greats, and helps you see through the problems of over trading today with an overload of access to information, and a media full of pump and dump charlatans.
Knowing yourself3
A serious trader or investor can never dismiss this book. It's a must read considering there are not very many investment psychology books written with a comprehensive coverage. And if you know Pring's background and have read more of his books, you will understand this work better. He has done a good work in nailing the points of Investment psychology specially by dedicating a section on "Knowing yourself". Easily one of the best books written on the subjet. One reading is not enough if you want to really get "IT".
Good read but not very useful for beginners3
This book utilizes the historical events of various markets (mostly the US stock market) to explain various behaviours of market participants. The information is concise and each chapter deliver its points clearly. Part 3 of the book even list the trading rules of various well known authors/traders so that the readers can feel the importance of discipline as these well known individuals have to list a set of rules to remind themselves what not to do.
One thing I do not like are quoted results from research on trader psychology. The conclusions mentioned do not really sound very scientific nor making any sense. e.g. only "successful" traders are studied and conclusion is made without mentioning any similar study to prove such quality do not exist on "unsucessful" traders.
Overall, this is a good read for someone who already have experience in trading the market and would like to start learning something about the psychology aspect of trading. It will not be useful at all for a beginner who has not experience the emotional ups and downs related to trading, as the beginner is not likely to be able to connect with the content at all.

It's easy to see why this is the #1 prescribed book5
I've read several "self help" books on depression and I got the most out of this one, by far. I think maybe because it was so easy to identify with much of what he said. Like when he is talking about the different types of distorted thinking, "Hey, I do that!" His suggestions are simple and easy to follow. He admits to thoughts you may have as you read and responds to them. Just overall, I really felt like this book spoke to me more than any of the others that I have read.
Feel Good5
Good book! Arrived on time and in good condition. This book would help anyone to analyse their thoughts and make corrections in actions and thought toward a better life. I highly recommend it!
Very Helpful!5
This book is truly awakening, it made me realize how distorted I view the world. I believe that the learnings I have gained from this book will make me a better wife, mother and friend. Good luck to all in the frustrating battle with depression, I hope you find the book as helpful as I did!
Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor E. Frankl
Product Description
Psychiatrist Viktor Frankl's memoir has riveted generations of readers with its descriptions of life in Nazi death camps and its lessons for spiritual survival. Between 1942 and 1945 Frankl labored in four different camps, including Auschwitz, while his parents, brother, and pregnant wife perished. Based on his own experience and the experiences of those he treated in his practice, Frankl argues that we cannot avoid suffering but we can choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it, and move forward with renewed purpose. Frankl's theory—known as logotherapy, from the Greek word logos ("meaning")—holds that our primary drive in life is not pleasure, as Freud maintained, but the discovery and pursuit of what we personally find meaningful.
At the time of Frankl's death in 1997, Man's Search for Meaning had sold more than 10 million copies in twenty-four languages. A 1991 reader survey by the Library of Congress and the Book-of-the-Month Club that asked readers to name a "book that made a difference in your life" found Man's Search for Meaning among the ten most influential books in America.
Born in Vienna in 1905 Viktor E. Frankl earned an M.D. and a Ph.D. from the University of Vienna. He published more than thirty books on theoretical and clinical psychology and served as a visiting professor and lecturer at Harvard, Stanford, and elsewhere. In 1977 a fellow survivor, Joseph Fabry, founded the Viktor Frankl Institute of Logotherapy. Frankl died in 1997.
Harold S. Kushner is rabbi emeritus at Temple Israel in Natick, Massachusetts, and the author of several best-selling books, including When Bad Things Happen to Good People.
William J. Winslade is a philosopher, lawyer, and psychoanalyst at the University of Texas Medical School in Galveston.

Wonderful book - even if you've found meaning in your life!5
Title says it all. The second half of the book has some really great tips & tricks for life. You shouldn't skip the first half of the book since it ties into and validates the teachings in the second half of the book.
Sometimes the writing is a bit awkward and verbose (he does speak in technical terms at times), but go slow and really try to understand what he's saying. The book is a really quick read, but again take your time!
For a while I really didn't understand this quote from the author: "Live as if you were living a second time, and as though you had acted wrongly the first time." But, after taking some time to think about it (like the time you need to read the book), it truly hit home what this quote means.
I'd recommend this book to anyone!
A great introduction to Viktor Frankl5
Viktor Frankl, famed psychotherapist and a holocaust survivor, said: The spiritual dimension cannot be ignored, for it is what makes us human. Spirituality is at the core of who we are; it defines for us what is meaningful in life.
Among all living things, only we humans can envision our futures and play out mental scenarios of how we will make our visions a reality.
Viktor Frankl, survivor of the Holocaust, emphasized that the meaning of life is not what happens to us. It is what we do with that which happens to us.
Viktor Frankl while interned in sub-human conditions in a Nazi concentration camp found meaning through meditating. He would overcome these horrendous and barbaric conditions by holding a mental image of him speaking to a group of International Psychiatrists at a special dinner event.
His wife had been transferred to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, where she died. On April 27, 1945, Frankl was liberated. Among his immediate relatives, the only survivor was his sister, who had escaped by emigrating to Australia. It was due to his and others' suffering in these camps that he came to his hallmark conclusion that even in the most absurd, painful and dehumanized situation, life has potential meaning and that therefore even suffering is meaningful. Meaning cannot be invented but must be discovered.
Viktor Frankl wrote "Man's Search for Meaning" after surviving the worst conditions a human can experience during his imprisonment at Auschwitz.
Viktor Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning - the classic best seller now considered to be one of the most important contributions to psychiatry since the writing of Freud. Frankl gives a moving account of his life amid the horrors of the Nazi death camps, chronicling the harrowing experience that led to his discovery of his theory of logotherapy.
Viktor Frankl, to be sure, leaves a profound legacy. He wrote many books on existentialism and Logotherapy. Throughout his life and his work, he reminds us that we all have important work to do, that whatever we do is important, and that there is meaning everywhere, all the time.
Human freedom, therefore, is the freedom of responsibility. Freedom without responsibility is something arbitrary, senseless and either leaves us directionless, or can lead to irresponsible, that is, lawless, immoral and violent, self-destructive ways of living. Human kindness can be found in all groups, even those which as a whole it would be easy to condemn. Because boundaries between groups overlap we must not try to simplify matters by saying that these men are angels and those others are devils.
As far as happiness is concerned Frankl, said: Happiness must happen, and the same holds for success: you have to let it happen by not caring about it.
If you want to get better acquainted to the work of Viktor Frankl " Man's Search for Meaning" is a good place to start.

Suffering, Meaning and a Worthy Life....5
Suffering, Meaning & a Worthwhile Life....
"A psychiatrist who personally has faced such extremity [as the Nazi death camps] is a psychiatrist worth listening to. He, if anyone, should be able to view our human condition with compassion. Dr. Frankl's words have a profoundly honest ring, for they rest on experiences to deep for deception."
So wrote Gordon Allport, Harvard Professor of Psychology and at mid-20th century, one of the great American psychologists. What does Frankl say? More vitally, what talk has he walked?
"Man's Search for Meaning" is not a boastful or an easy book. But it is forcefully honest & gripping -- ongoing struggles, failures and flashes of success, brilliant success really. Not so much in preserving sanity. For who of us has the right to dare call insane anyone in a concentration camp who became overwhelmed or gave up? Frankl's struggles, and the struggles of those around him, were how to keep humanely living in the face of what seems unfaceable.
As Frankl says, "...we had nothing to lose except our so ridiculously naked lives." If there's a meaning, a reason, a "why?" sturdy enough to bear that load, it must confront outrageous & unavoidable suffering.
I'm a psychotherapist; I work with many who suffer: children severely abused & neglected, adults still caught up in their abuse, soldiers back from Iraq along with their spouses & children. A label is easy & obvious: PTSD. Healing is not.
Frankl, writing well before we called this a "stress disorder" (Concentration camps = STRESS? Can you feel how wrong it is to stop at the mechanics of stress?), shows us a deeper, more accurate, more transcendent reality & truth. Struggling to find a worthy life in the face of suffering is not a "disorder". In that struggle we can become profoundly sickened, and our risk of sickening is never far away. But equally possible & present is a humbling choice: we can honestly face our suffering and struggle to find (create, build, open ourselves up to, ....) our own meaning. "Our own", in that it is individual to us, but it is never "just ourselves".
Through brutally-learned understandings & terribly-lived examples, Frankl shows us ways. I fear quoting a few lines. It feels like sound-biting & trivializing, not only misleading but obscene. Frankl isn't about one-liners, though he writes many memorable lines & stories. But lines pale when removed from their stories, their struggles to grasp onto meaning.
"Man's Search for Meaning" is short and easy-to-read, especially the first section, about the camps. Read it. Likely someday you'll be glad you did.

Organizational Psychology: A Scientist Practitioner Approach by Steve M. Jex
Product Description
A comprehensive treatment of the science and practice of organizational psychology
Following a scientist-practitioner model, Organizational Psychology explores the practical implications of the current research in the field, expertly integrating multicultural and international issues.
Beginning with a foundation of research methodology, author Steve Jex examines the behavior of individuals in organizational settings. Drawing on his experiences as a consultant and educator, he uses actual cases to illustrate workplace issues, offering balanced coverage of such key topics as occupational stress, motivation, and corporate culture. Also presented is unique information on research methods and the use of statistics in understanding organizations.
With an emphasis on applying theory and research in practice, Jex explores the mechanisms that organizations use to influence employees' behavior, addressing the major motivation theories in organizational psychology. Readers will discover how psychological models can be used to improve employee morale, productivity, and quality of service. The focus then shifts from the individual to the group level-an important distinction given the increased reliance on teams in many organizations. Jex identifies the factors that have the greatest impact on group effectiveness and examines the dynamics underlying intergroup behavior. Finally, he moves to the organization ("macro") level, revealing a variety of ways in which organizations engage in planned change with the assistance of behavioral science knowledge.

Organizational Psychology3
This book is not as helpful as I had hoped. It contains much information, but the layout is not conducive to skimming and accelerated look-up of information.
Good for research, but presentation lacking3
I ordered this book for my class in Organizational Psychology. It would be an excellent text for students interested in conducting research in the field of organizational psychology. However, the information is not presented in a manner that makes it easy to glean major points for those interested in the application of the data to an organization. From this perspective, there are nuggets of gold, but they must be searched out and reorganized for use. Because I am interested in information pertaining to what organizations can do to improve processes, the presentation makes learning more difficult. Information on what organizations should do is scattered throughout the various sections of the text. Sumamry sections discussing how organizations can apply this information would be helpful. I would also prefer that in addition to research results the text provide example stories to illustrate these results. This would provide more interest and make it easier to assimilate the information presented. In summary, this is an excellent text from the perspective of one conducting research, but difficult to follow for those interested in applying this research to organizational management.

Amazon.com
At some point in our lives, we all wish life had come with an instruction manual; a little something to help us navigate the labyrinth of this complex world with a touch of grace and dignity. Is it so much to ask? Luckily for us, Kirsten M. Lagatree has risen to the challenge. Checklists for Life offers 104 lists that can help you with all those nagging little uncertainties, from organizing your closet to choosing a lawyer. "Show me a successful person," asserts Lagatree, "and I'll show you a list-maker.... Lists ensure that the job gets done correctly and completely--and with the added finesse that springs from an uncluttered mind."
Categorized into personal safety, getting organized, stocking up, home maintenance, housework, flowers and plants, social life, correspondence, death, children, moving, travel, health, the law, your money, professional life, your computer, and your car, many of the lists in this book consist, as she points out, of commonsense advice. Others, though, are less obvious. For instance, her advice on extras to pack when you go abroad (electricity converters, adapters, pre-addressed envelopes and Benadryl, just to name a few) and choosing realtors (Do they insist on a buyer/broker contract? Do they use a computer to help find homes?) are clearly the product of experience. While all the lists are highly helpful--the checklist for organizing your workspace alone is worth the price of the book--the best seem to be those for less common events, such as buying and moving to a new home or preparing for court. Lagatree has clearly done her research on these topics and her advice will save you time, money, and a great deal of stress. --Laszlo Simonyi

Informative4
For anyone who is young or inexperienced at everyday life to dos, this book can guide the way! I found it to be extremely informative. It helped me to get my life in order.
put this book in a drawer3
keep this book. read it a little at a time. some good thoughts but too much to consume in one reading. Wished that I had gotten it from the library (with extensions) than having bought it. Oh, well, I love Amazon.
I RETURNED this book1
This book is terrible. The lists are disappointingly incomplete and inconsequential. For example:
A list on tipping includes tips for restroom attendants, but it omits tips for valet parking. In my life, I have used valet parking significantly more often than a restroom attendant.
A list of common foreign phrases omits pronunciations. How useful is that? Knowing the spelling of a phrase does one no good during conversation should the pronunciation of a phrase be very different from its spelling.
Basically, if one had been raised by kindly wolves in the forest, and recently dropped into modern society, this book might be marginally useful. But anyone with a modicum of planning or forethought would have outgrown this trite little waste of words and paper by age 10.

Very workable program
I have chronic pain syndrome as a result of a couple of spinal cord injuries. Sometimes it is more than a bit overwhelming. The hard part is the way the pain is always there. Sometimes it's worse; sometimes it's tolerable. But, it never stops. What I have found over the years is that if you suffer from chronic pain doctors are a sorry lot for the most part. If you have a good one, you are truly blessed. The ones I encountered seem they either don't understand your suffering, don't believe the degree of your suffering, or just don't care. None seem adept at offering any coping advice beyond a shrug and anti-depressants. Almost all practice with a greater concern that the DEA is looking over their shoulder at the pain medicine they prescribe than helping you as their patient. Even pain specialists I have seen seem to be more hi tech gadget sales people than care givers. Or they are the worst of the skeptics in believing the patient. It's hard to find anybody who cares or understands what you're going through. Except you. That's what's so empowering about this book. It makes no excuses and pulls no punches about the medical profession, friends, family, and the sorry way they almost all treat pain sufferers. The emphasis here is that YOU have to seize the initiative and guide yourself down the path of getting some sembelence of a life back. What's contained here is a simple method to find the parameters you can function in as you explore what you can and can't do. There are easy to follow tips and guides that help you document your condition as you follow the program. Not only is this useful for you as a timeline to measure progress, but it provides a solid database to present to your physcian which may help him/her understand what you are going through. But, just like following a diet plan or an exercise regimen, it's up to you to follow it through. The approach isn't pie in the sky and there are no claims that you'll find some miracle cure or fix. It's an instruction manual on how to seize back as much of your life as you can from the pain that holds you down. My next visit to my Neurologist will have me showing him this book and trying to resist the urge to slap him upside the head with it. Just the first 1/4 of it has done more for me than seeing him over the past 3 years has done. Mostly, this program has given me hope. That's something he never even thought to offer.
Good basic book!
This is a really good basic book for managing pain, it helps teach you to pace yourself, accept your condition, think differently and figure out how to do things for yourself. It is like a basic workbook. It doesn't judge you and talks about the levels of acceptance.
I personally enjoy reading books that give me meaning for my experience. I have found that Kitchen Table Wisdom is a really meaningful book for me.
Highly Recommended
I am a clinical psychologist working in a multidisciplinary pain treatment clinic. In my view, this book wins best of breed for a pain coping resources self-help book. I would put it in the running for best of show in self-help generally. Dennis Turk, PhD. is a leading expert in the subject of chronic pain in general and what works in pain coping resources in particular.
Like other good pain coping self-help books (e.g., "Managing Your Pain Before It Mangers You" by Margaret Caudill, MD, PhD), it does an effective job of covering the range of what has been learned on helping chronic pain patients help themselves. Important areas of pain coping resources are effectively addressed (e.g., effectively adopting the role of your own pain expert; the extremely important, but frequently overlooked, issue of pacing; learning to effectively moderate sympathetic arousal; reducing fatigue; how interpersonal factors effect pain and visa-versa; managing fatigue; changing thoughts and behaviors; maintaining gains).
Unlike other books on these subjects, this book not only provides understanding and information. It is structured as an effective self-help tool. Although I do encourage my patients to use this book as part of their treatment with me, I strongly disagree with the reviewer above who suggested that the book is not effective to use "by yourself" and should include a "user manual." I have found the truth to be quite the contrary. The user manual is right there. The book is structured into ten lessons that conclude with well-conceived exercises to effectively encourage adoption of proven resources. Many of my patients pick up the book and effectively apply it with little or no assistance from me.
For others, I often make use of the book a focus of therapy. I hasten to add that for many with chronic pain the first issue is determining if the cost of addressing/managing pain appears worth the benefit. For many gaining the motivation to help self is the biggest challenge.
If you are looking for self-help help with chronic pain, I highly recommend this book. I also recommend "Managing Your Pain Before It Mangers You." In addition, I recommend this book to healthcare professionals who regularly, or occasionally, treat individuals with chronic pain, as an effective summary of current clinical wisdom on these subjects.
