An Introduction to Clinical Emergency Medicine

Product Description

Winner of the 2006 AMWA Book Awards Physicians Category, An Introduction to Clinical Emergency Medicine is a much-needed resource for individuals practicing in this challenging field. It takes a novel approach, describing in detail the best and most current methods including initial patient evaluation, generation of differential diagnoses, problem-solving and management of challenging conditions based on presenting symptoms. Unlike other textbooks, in which the diagnosis is known, this textbook approaches clinical problems as clinicians approach patients - without full knowledge of the final diagnosis. It provides an understanding of how to approach patients with undifferentiated conditions, ask the right questions, gather historical data, utilize physical examination skills and order and interpret laboratory and radiographic tests. It provides current management and disposition strategies with controversies presented, including pearls and summary points for each topic covered. The book is multi-author, each contributor chosen because of a track record in teaching as well as being internationally recognised experts in the specialty.

Review
'An Introduction to Clinical Emergency Medicine has something for everyone, at all levels, from student to senior. ... The principal 'added value' of the book is the symptoms-based, rather than diagnosis-based, approach. Patients are managed according to the severity of their presentation, often when the clinical 'picture' is incomplete, so the focus is on clinical decision-making.' Clinical Medicine 'I rather liked this book. In particular the way the various topics were laid out giving advice on how to approach the patient. ... This is a book that all Accident and Emergency trainees will be very pleased to own. I wish it had been available many years ago when I was a trainee working in the Accident and Emergency Department.' Anaesthesia 'As a clinical practitioner, I find this is one of the most useful general texts I have seen in some time.' Accident and Emergency Nursing Journal 'It was direct, gave good advice and led the reader to pass on a well examined, well diagnosed and well treated patient to the next layer of the complex medical tree that is today's modern general hospital. This is a book that all Accident and Emergency trainees will be very pleased to own.' British Journal of Anaesthesia

Review
"This is a book that all Accident and Emergency trainees will be very pleased to own. I wish it had been available many years ago when I was a trainee working in the Accident and Emergency Department." -Anaesthesia, R.M. Grounds

"An Introduction to Clinical Emergency Medicine has something for everyone, at all levels, from student to senior...valuable to those learning the specialty or preparing tutorials for staff in training or students." - Clinical Medicine, Ed Glucksman, King's College Hospital

"An Introduction To Clinical Emergency Medicine has something for everyone, at all levels, from student to senior... Drawings and photographs are used to good effect, and there are charts, diagrams and algorithms galore, again reflecting the emphasis on decision-making as information becomes available. The specialty is covered comprehensively ... the refreshing approach which sees information conveyed in the way that patient care unfolds.”
Clinical Medicine (2005)

“As a clinical practitioner, I find this one of the most useful general texts I have seen in some time. Every time I look at it to review it, I end up bouncing from chapter to chapter, just exploring different clinical questions.... easy to use, whether as a standard text in emergency care practitioner preparation, or simply to support decision-making on a day-to-day basis...This extremely practical textbook will be valuable in any emergency care setting, and to all staff who are involved in patient management.”
Emergency Nursing (2005)

“The book is clearly written for doctors working in Accident and Emergency Medicine. With that aim I feel it has succeeded. It was direct, gave good advice and led the reader to pass on a well examined, well diagnosed and well treated patient to the next layer of the complex medical tree that is today's modern general hospital. This is a book that all Accident and Emergency trainees will be very pleased to own. I wish it had been available many years ago when I was a trainee working in the Accident and Emergency Department.”
British Journal of Anaesthesia (2005)

“This book catches the eye with several high-quality photographs, well-executed line drawings, fine-resolution radiographs, and 4-color tables and figures. Other emergency medicine textbooks do not adequately cover the unique starting point for emergency physicians: patients presenting with symptoms and signs...The book delivers on its promise of a complaint oriented focus. Strict adherence to standard headings in each chapter increases this book's communication power.”
Annals of Internal Medicine (2006)

“The kind of book that can be used as a quick reference to be sure that all the relevant questions are asked and that they have a complete differential diagnosis before presenting a patient...Will provide the student with a framework of how to approach patients that will be valuable throughout their careers.”
Annals of Emergency Medicine (2006)

“Attractively presented with clear illustrations...Most relevant for senior house officers, emergency nurse practitioners and medical students.”
Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine (2006)

"The medical student and resident will find An Introduction to Clinical Emergency Medicine a valuable tool in preparing for the ED experience. A review of the differential-diagnosis tables also would serve as an excellent preparation tool for the written boards or for the in-service training team...illustrations and radiographs are of excellent quality, much better than expected for a book of this price." Academic Emergency Medicine

"The complaint-oriented approach of An Introduction to Clinical Emergency Medicine is its greatest strength. Faculty will appreciate that it stresses the pertinent and guided history and the physical findings for each complaint, which often is a difficult and frustrating concept to teach. Overall, the text highlights the uniqueness of the specialty and illustratrates how EM pracitioners think. It has achieved its goal of presenting an EM text in a complaint-oriented fashion." great reference5
Organized by complaints, this book is great for how to work through most presentations to the ER, from when the patient arrives all the way to dispo. Good student reference, came recommended to me by a resident.

Strong Work5

I have found this work an excellent introduction to emergency medicine, and should be first reading for any new student interested in Emergency Medicine. Dr. Madhaddevan and Dr. Garmel should be applauded for this work. Strong work Gus and Maha.

Awesome EM Book5
This book is concise enough to actually be readable. It is, in my opinion better than Tintanelli because it is more straight forward and you don't need to have 2 Vol. with you at all times. Overall a great buy.

Clinical Research Methods for Surgeons

Review
"There are larger reference texts but the simplicity of this book makes it an ideal place to start." -British Journal of Surgery
Product Description
Clinical Research Methods for Surgeons is a comprehensive guide for the surgical scientist, and serves as both a critical review of existing literature and a reference guide for clinical research methodologies as they apply to surgery. The text addresses the clinical research questions facing 21st century surgeons, and provides clear direction on how to incorporate sophisticated research techniques into practice. In addition to the surgical generalist, this practical volume is specifically oriented to surgeons who treat unique diseases, yet have no single resource to facilitate clinical research in these specific areas.

This comprehensive and easy-to-use guide encompasses the entire process of clinical study design, application, and assessment. Part One is aimed at the young surgeon about to engage in new studies, and gives a general overview of the infrastructure of clinical research. Parts Two and Three are geared towards experienced investigators interested in pursuing clinical research and surgeons reviewing the literature for practical application. Part Two focuses on study design and related statistical issues, while Part Three is concerned with measuring and assessing the outcome of clinical studies. Part Four presents topics of interest to the active investigator, such as quality of care and cost-effectiveness analyses. Clinical Research Methods for Surgeons is relevant to both beginning investigators and established researchers, and addresses the unique concerns of surgical diseases and acknowledges that they require special approaches to deal with clinical questions.

The Attack

It seems as if the attack always comes at night.

On a weekend, with the doctor's office closed until Monday.

A small frightened child and an equally frightened parent, struggling alone in the dark against a potentially life-threatening disease.

Questions fill the mother's mind: Will it pass this time -- or will I need to get everyone out of bed and rush to the emergency room? Should I give her another puff on her inhaler, or has she had too much already? Was I wrong to let her play out in the cold today? If I know it's not her fault, why am I so angry? And how will we get through the weekend when I'm so exhausted

Monday morning, at the doctor's office: "She seems to be breathing fine," they say. The look in the doctor's eyes says more: overprotective parent . . . manipulative child

A handful of prescriptions for drugs with strange-sounding names and confusing instructions -- short-acting, long-acting. Something about steroids -- aren't those supposed to be bad for you? Does anybody know what the long-term side effects are? Am I doing my child harm?

Waiting at the pharmacy. The cash register rings. Again. And again.

Back home, a phone message from the school. "She's been missing so many days, she's falling behind." And another from the boss: "We need to know when you'll be in."

Arguments at home. The same old arguments. Over who can smoke and where. The dog. The carpets. And whether it isn't all just in her head anyway.
Friends and relatives are offended by the suggestion that their house is too dusty, that she can't ride in their car if they insist on smoking while driving. The teacher still doesn't see why she can't wait until lunchtime to get her inhaler from the office.

And it's only Monday.

I've seen the toll asthma takes on families when they show up, worried and exhausted, in a hospital emergency room. Or when they have to fight to be taken seriously by teachers, friends, and relatives. Or when they somehow have to find a way to deal with asthma on top of all the other pressures they face in their daily lives.

For too many parents and children, asthma feels like a roller coaster without the safety bar.

But it doesn't have to be that way. Not any more.

New medications and research and new insights into why asthma occurs have sparked a revolution in asthma treatment.

It used to be that all we really could do was react to asthma -- keep an eye on it and try to manage the symptoms when they occurred. Inevitably, though, many patients bounced from crisis to crisis.

Today, we don't have to react. With the right combination of environmental controls and newer, safer medications, we can prevent asthma symptoms from starting.

These new techniques don't offer a cure, in the sense that we can make the underlying disease go away for good. But they come pretty close. They offer a way to control your child's asthma and allow him or her to lead a normal, healthy, active life.

A good analogy is nearsightedness. Glasses or contact lenses don't cure it. But they remove the limitations that nearsighted people would otherwise face, allowing them to drive, read the blackboard in school, catch a baseball, and do just about anything else that people with 20-20 vision can do.

In our medical center -- and others in the Kaiser Permanente health care system -- we've been working with these new medications and techniques, and we've learned how big a difference they make.

But we've learned something else as well: They're not enough. You can think of them as tools. But even the best tools aren't much use without the knowledge of how to use them. The new medications and tools for asthma treatment are no different. By helping parents and children learn how to use them more effectively, we've seen dramatic changes for the better among our own patients.

The other part of the equation is to put parents and children in charge of their own asthma care. The traditional model of health care, with the doctor making most decisions and the patient following along, isn't very effective in asthma care. A large part of our success has come from helping our patients and their families understand exactly why asthma happens and what they can do to keep it under control.

We've worked with them to apply simple, common-sense techniques to make these medications even more effective with fewer side effects. We've helped them take other steps that have reduced their need for medication. And, working together, we've come up with practical solutions for the real-world problems of asthma, such as how to get relatives and teachers to understand.

We've learned from our patients as well. We've learned about the obstacles they've faced (which are surprisingly similar from one patient to the next), about their fears and concerns, about what they have discovered that works.

This book distills those lessons. You can think of it as a sort of user's manual that helps you understand and make the most of the new advances in asthma treatment.

I can't promise a secret miracle cure for asthma. But I can offer an alternative to living from one asthma crisis to the next. With the right techniques and medications, the vast majority of kids with asthma can live full and normal lives -- in control of their asthma.

The Most Important Lesson

In the chapters that follow, we'll explore all of these concepts in detail. But first I'd like to share the most important lesson we've learned about conquering asthma:

The more you expect, the more you'll achieve.

A pamphlet published by the National Institutes of Health sums it up best: "Your Asthma Can Be Controlled: Expect Nothing Less!"

When you've been living from crisis to crisis, it's easy to get discouraged. It's easy to start believing that the medications don't work, or that your child's asthma is especially resistant. It's easy to think that what you do doesn't matter much. That kind of thinking can create a vicious cycle. When kids, parents -- and yes, even doctors -- set their expectations too low, they're less likely to stick with the things that can really make a difference.

So if you've felt discouraged, I urge you to take the first step right now: Set your expectations high. Don't settle.

The results will follow. You and your child deserve no less.

Handbook of Functional Neuroimaging of Cognition, 2nd Edition (Cognitive Neuroscience)

Product Description

This essential resource on neuroimaging provides an accessible and user-friendly introduction to the field written by leading researchers. The book describes theoretical and methodological developments in the use of functional neuroimaging techniques to study the neural basis of cognition, from early scientific efforts to link brain and behavior to the latest applications of fMRI and PET methods. The core of the book covers fMRI and PET studies in specific domains: attention, skill learning, semantic memory, language, episodic memory, working memory, and executive functions. By introducing a technique within the description of a domain, the book offers a clear explanation of the process while highlighting its biological context. The emphasis on readability makes Handbook of Functional Neuroimaging of Cognition ideal for classroom use in advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in cognitive neuroscience.

This second edition has been completely updated to reflect new developments in the field, with existing chapters rewritten and new chapters added to each section. The section on history and methods now includes a chapter on the crucial topic of the physics of functional neuroimaging; the chapters on skill learning and executive functions are new to the domain section; and chapters on childhood development and emotion and social cognition have been added to the section on developmental, social, and clinical applications. The color insert has been increased in size, enhancing the visual display of representative findings.

Excellent & comprehensive intro5
This is an excellent book, focusing on fMRI and PET, that goes over in detail methodology and applications. The methodology sections includes details on the underlying physiology (it's more complicated than just blood flow and 02 extraction)and critiques the commonly used subtraction method, preferring instead event-evoked studies. Going beyond the simplistic concepts of areas "lighting up" being "for" this or that cognitive function, there is coverage of network analysis. The methodology is obviously still in an early evolutionary phase, and each chapter has closing section on controversies and future directions. The application sections cover neuroimaging of attention, visual recognition, semantic, episodic and working memory, and language. There is good critical review of the literature here, and there is no tendency towards oversimplification of conflicting results. There is also a chapter on cognitive aging that I found particularly informative, showing how the elderly utilize different neural networks than younger people to perform various cognitive tasks. The book is about 400 pages and includes 22 color plates. This is a very rich and rapidly evolving research area, and I think this is a great intro book for clinicians in neurology, psychology and psychiatry, as well as neuroradiology, to get an appreciation of what just a few years ago was a science fiction concept...taking pictures of the mind as it thinks.

A Historical Dictionary of Psychiatry by Edward Shorter

Product Description

This is the first historical dictionary of psychiatry. It covers the subject from autism to Vienna, and includes the key concepts, individuals, places, and institutions that have shaped the evolution of psychiatry and the neurosciences. An introduction puts broad trends and international differences in context, and there is an extensive bibliography for further reading. Each entry gives the main dates, themes, and personalities involved in the unfolding of the topic. Longer entries describe the evolution of such subjects as depression, schizophrenia, and psychotherapy. The book gives ready reference to when things happened in psychiatry, how and where they happened, and who made the main contributions. In addition, it touches on such social themes as "women in psychiatry," "criminality and psychiatry," and "homosexuality and psychiatry." A comprehensive index makes immediately accessible subjects that do not appear in the alphabetical listing. Among those who will appreciate this dictionary are clinicians curious about the origins of concepts they use in their daily practices, such as "paranoia," "selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors" (SSRIs), or "tardive dyskinesia"; basic scientists who want ready reference to the development of such concepts as "neurotransmitters," "synapse," or "neuroimaging"; students of medical history keen to situate the psychiatric narrative within larger events, and the general public curious about illnesses that might affect them, their families and their communities-or readers who merely want to know about the grand chain of events from the asylum to Freud to Prozac. Bringing together information from the English, French, German, Italian, and Scandinavian languages, the Dictionary rests on an enormous base of primary sources that cover the growth of psychiatry through all of Western society.

Heavy reading, but worth it.4
This is a more advanced strategy based bible for the busy trader and the mindset involved. I bought this one along with Trading in the Zone and found the two of them compliment each other quite nicely. He covers a wide range of philosophies from the greats, and helps you see through the problems of over trading today with an overload of access to information, and a media full of pump and dump charlatans.

Knowing yourself3
A serious trader or investor can never dismiss this book. It's a must read considering there are not very many investment psychology books written with a comprehensive coverage. And if you know Pring's background and have read more of his books, you will understand this work better. He has done a good work in nailing the points of Investment psychology specially by dedicating a section on "Knowing yourself". Easily one of the best books written on the subjet. One reading is not enough if you want to really get "IT".

Good read but not very useful for beginners3
This book utilizes the historical events of various markets (mostly the US stock market) to explain various behaviours of market participants. The information is concise and each chapter deliver its points clearly. Part 3 of the book even list the trading rules of various well known authors/traders so that the readers can feel the importance of discipline as these well known individuals have to list a set of rules to remind themselves what not to do.
One thing I do not like are quoted results from research on trader psychology. The conclusions mentioned do not really sound very scientific nor making any sense. e.g. only "successful" traders are studied and conclusion is made without mentioning any similar study to prove such quality do not exist on "unsucessful" traders.
Overall, this is a good read for someone who already have experience in trading the market and would like to start learning something about the psychology aspect of trading. It will not be useful at all for a beginner who has not experience the emotional ups and downs related to trading, as the beginner is not likely to be able to connect with the content at all.

Organizational Psychology: A Scientist Practitioner Approach by Steve M. Jex

Product Description

A comprehensive treatment of the science and practice of organizational psychology

Following a scientist-practitioner model, Organizational Psychology explores the practical implications of the current research in the field, expertly integrating multicultural and international issues.

Beginning with a foundation of research methodology, author Steve Jex examines the behavior of individuals in organizational settings. Drawing on his experiences as a consultant and educator, he uses actual cases to illustrate workplace issues, offering balanced coverage of such key topics as occupational stress, motivation, and corporate culture. Also presented is unique information on research methods and the use of statistics in understanding organizations.

With an emphasis on applying theory and research in practice, Jex explores the mechanisms that organizations use to influence employees' behavior, addressing the major motivation theories in organizational psychology. Readers will discover how psychological models can be used to improve employee morale, productivity, and quality of service. The focus then shifts from the individual to the group level-an important distinction given the increased reliance on teams in many organizations. Jex identifies the factors that have the greatest impact on group effectiveness and examines the dynamics underlying intergroup behavior. Finally, he moves to the organization ("macro") level, revealing a variety of ways in which organizations engage in planned change with the assistance of behavioral science knowledge.

Organizational Psychology3
This book is not as helpful as I had hoped. It contains much information, but the layout is not conducive to skimming and accelerated look-up of information.

Good for research, but presentation lacking3
I ordered this book for my class in Organizational Psychology. It would be an excellent text for students interested in conducting research in the field of organizational psychology. However, the information is not presented in a manner that makes it easy to glean major points for those interested in the application of the data to an organization. From this perspective, there are nuggets of gold, but they must be searched out and reorganized for use. Because I am interested in information pertaining to what organizations can do to improve processes, the presentation makes learning more difficult. Information on what organizations should do is scattered throughout the various sections of the text. Sumamry sections discussing how organizations can apply this information would be helpful. I would also prefer that in addition to research results the text provide example stories to illustrate these results. This would provide more interest and make it easier to assimilate the information presented. In summary, this is an excellent text from the perspective of one conducting research, but difficult to follow for those interested in applying this research to organizational management.

Gold standard5
As an ER PA this is the gold standard to start with. Rosens is much more detailed but is too much to start with. I've found most everything I need is in this text.

Emergency Medicine: Comprehensive Study Guide 6th edition5
This book is a must. Its useful for any person who practice in the ER as well the outpatient. Is very good for general reference. The book give a review of the problem with a management oriented to the adequate level of care. Cover
every topics (trauma, pediatric, adult, ob/gyn, surgery). Is easy to read and well explain.

This book is an excellent learning tool!4
This book is a great textbook of emergency medicine, and I've chosen it over others simply because it's comprehensive without the useless drivel. Each section includes the necessary anatomy and pathophysiological considerations for the respective disoders. The subset of conditions are mentioned with just enough facts to understand the morbidity to treat it. The pictures, diagrams, algorithmic flow-charts, and drug regimens are a nice compliment, however, most of your clinical experience is going to come from interships and residency, so to assume this book is all you'll need to get by in EM is crazy. I still think it's the best out there to read before putting your mind to work.
