The Professional (Spenser)

Product Description
A knock on Spenser's office door can only mean one thing: a new case. This time the visitor is a local lawyer with an interesting story. Elizabeth Shaw specializes in wills and trusts at the Boston law firm of Shaw & Cartwright, and over the years she's developed a friendship with wives of very wealthy men. However, these rich wives have a mutual secret: they've all had an affair with a man named Gary Eisenhower- and now he's blackmailing them for money. Shaw hires Spenser to make Eisenhower "cease and desist," so to speak, but when women start turning up dead, Spenser's assignment goes from blackmail to murder.

As matters become more complicated, Spenser's longtime love, Susan, begins offering some input by analyzing Eisenhower's behavior patterns in hopes of opening up a new avenue of investigation. It seems that not all of Gary's women are rich. So if he's not using them for blackmail, then what is his purpose? Spenser switches tactics to focus on the husbands, only to find that innocence and guilt may be two sides of the same coin.

With its eloquently spare prose and some of the best supporting characters to grace the printed page, The Professional is further proof that "[t]here's hardly an author in the crime novel business like Parker" (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette).

Robert B. Parker is the author of more than fifty books.

ontological roots of schizophrenia4
This is an interesting book on how schizophrenia is more of an 'existential' problem than an illness. I think it has some real practical applications for those who work with this population. I wouldn't, however, throw out the more clinical way of viewing psychosis.

R. D. Laing is good 4
In particular, I endorse the back cover of another of his books, where it says that schizophrenics constantly try to escape because they perceive it is impossible to fulfill their needs. He stated it in a better way, of course; this is just how I remember it.

respect5
i just think that this book should be one that everyone reads at some point in their lives (sooner rather than later!). it really gives you something special, something i have very rarely experienced in a book. open the book and open your mind!

For the professional in the trenches5
The first edition of this book was exceptionally useful to the forensic psychologist attempting to stay current in both theory and applications in the field of cognition and memory. The second edition is also excellent -- it is readable, relevant, and accessible to the non-specialist in this area.

Great Read5
I've been an amateur pyrotechnician for years, and this book is a good addition to any newcomer to the hobby. Although I'd recommend you take a college course in chemistry before you even try to attempt anything in this book, if at all. You really need to know what you're doing, or you're going to get yourself hurt or killed, and that's not an exaggeration. You'll also need a BATF license to legally carry out any of these procedures in the United States. If you're going to start up the hobby, read and learn as much as you can, get a license, and you will be granted to practicing a very rewarding hobby. Or on the other hand, if you don't plan on embracing it as a hobby, and if you're just reading this for informational purposes, read away. Highly recommended.

Outstanding Chemistry Text5
First, realize that this book is a fairly technical organic chemistry text about explosives. Under the heading of explosives also fall black powder and some pyrotechnic compositions, but the bulk of the text is about high explosives. This was one of the first texts I read on explosives, and it is one of the best. That being said, I am a synthetic organic chemist by training, so I have a very different perspective on the material.

As one reader mentioned, there is a lot of history in this book. Davis was the chair of the historical section of the ACS (American Chemical Society) for many years, and it shows here. Much is written about the discovery and the industrial processes used to manufacture explosives. Their uses throughout wars and some commercial aspects are also noted. The history of black powder and pyrotechnics are a very informative read.

This is not a formulations book (i.e., the Anarchists' Cookbook, etc.). While it does have some laboratory procedures in it, they are written at a technical level, and without some knowledge of chemistry, it may be difficult to reproduce them.

The material is a little dated, as many of the explosives discovered after 1943 are left out (HMX, CL-20, etc.), but the explosives field is a very mature one, and the material herein is still quite good.

The pyrotechnics are of the 1940s vintage, where mercury, lead and arsenic salts were still in common use, and some other safety considerations were not in place. This book isn't a great place to try and build a library of formulations from, but it is good for the historical aspect.

Overall, the book is very well written and an interesting read. I enjoyed reading it both for the quality of writing and the witty humor interjected by Davis at times. I would highly recommend it to any chemists in the energetic materials world, as well as those interested in the history or chemistry of explosives.

An exellent introduction to Powder & Explosives4
I'm still reading the book. The truth is that its not what I was expecting, because the book was written about 194X during WW2, I had no idea until I recieved it! But its a very good introduction to the subject as it details the evolution throughout the years (of course, until 194X)

Dummies?
Well, I'm not a dummy but this book will make you check your past algebra skills.

Great
I have already received a degree in physics, but am always looking at texts for further understanding and alternate perspectives. This book is good for either a beginner or someone looking strengthen their grasp of physics.

Pretty good
It's pretty good, although it could be better. It would have helped to be a little more concise, or to have more examples; really just MORE. It does help, though.

A decent textbook
The book isn't the best organized in some regards, but it's decently written and decently eyeball-scan-friendly.

The ninth edition isn't as good as previous editions
I've been using Anton for my linear algebra classes since 1984, and have gone through nine editions. The ninth edition seems much more confusing than previous editions. He often moves text around without seeing that it makes sense in the new context: a theorem will use notation that isn't introduced until later, for example. He comes back to eigenvalues and eigenvectors over and over, looking at them from different perspectives. This should work if done well, but instead it confuses my students. I'm going to look for another book for the next time I teach the class.

No practical application....
This book mostly consists of a bunch of long droning proofs and severely lacks any real world applications. If your looking for an enjoyable learning experience, this is not the book.

"There is one thing that can be said about A Fool and His Money that cannot be said about any other volume of investment advice: You will never make a penny from the information in this book. No work on the subject of personal finance has even tried to make this claim before. That is because works on the subject of personal finance are all lying. John Rothchild is the only fully honest author in the genre."—from the Foreword by P. J. O'Rourke.

A veritable gold mine of comic insight into the predicament of an average investor's avid pursuit of wealth, A Fool and His Money is John Rothchild's critically acclaimed personal account of a year devoted to investing his money in the markets. The entire investment world—its characters, institutions, customs, and myths—passes under Rothchild's sharp and profoundly humorous scrutiny.

From Publishers Weekly
"If you think it's right it's wrong, and vice versa," quips freelance writer Rothchild in this picaresque odyssey of his search for a surefire way to multiply money. With a $14,000 grubstake, he invested in stocks and made the rounds: visiting brokerage houses, interviewing financial advisers, studying market newsletters, appraising mutual funds, penetrating the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, the Federal Reserve purlieus and Chicago's commodity trading pits (where putting one's money is "like holding up bread for the seagulls"). His education complete, Rothchild found that most of his capital evaporated even before the October '87 Crash, which completed the job. The average investor, the author concludes in this rueful, ironic and doggedly humorous tale, is "a born loser." Nevertheless, readers will be vastly entertained while learning investment essentials and idiosyncrasies they never knew they ought to know about.
Copyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
This book is an exemplar on how not to invest, but it is not helpful on how to invest intelligently. The author describes his unsuccessful journey investing in stocks, futures, etc.; his use of investment newsletters and attendance at seminars; and his investigation of investment markets. Other than painting a grim picture on how easy it was for him to lose money, the book has little substance. While well written and at times entertaining, it would have been much more valuable if the author had analyzed his judgments and errors and discussed investment alternatives. Instead, the book is darted with "tips" that are more humorous than useful. Arthur J. Lieb, Library of Congress

From the Inside Flap
You set aside some money, quit your job, devote yourself entirely to studying the markets, and start to invest. Then, through hard work and your own magical intuition, you become so wealthy your major concern is finding a fashionable hobby to soak up your abundant leisure time. All in about a year. Now, thanks to this hugely entertaining and informative book, you can live out the fantasy without risking your money, your job—or your sanity. Since its acclaimed debut a decade ago, A Fool and His Money has become a treasured investment classic. It's the comic, firsthand account of a first-time investor who sets out to make his wildest money dreams come true. In a surge of optimism and enterprise, financial writer John Rothchild drops everything to devote an entire year to learning how to invest a modest sum of money. Motivated by a sincere desire to get rich, he undertakes his mission by systematically studying as much as he can about the markets and how they really operate. He fearlessly asks the most basic questions, observes the professionals at work, studies the newsletters, makes investments, and reports back on everything—including his own highly personal and often hilarious reactions. With Rothchild as your guide through the marketplace, you will:
Eavesdrop as his broker explains in fluent double-talk why he should buy a certain "hot stock"
Share in his buyer's remorse as Rothchild purchases an unknown technology company stock that puts him on an emotional roller coaster
Be humbled as he enters the almighty Federal Reserve Bank and struggles to understand its omnipotent power over his personal finances
Witness the excitement and confusion of the Commodities Exchange and find out what pork bellies really are
Hear firsthand the enigmatic and undoubtedly wise words of various wizards of Wall Street
Sympathize with Rothchild as he explains his transactions to his loved ones
Blush as he shamelessly attempts to deceive them
In a gesture of pure magnanimity, Rothchild also includes the hard-won bits of wisdom he calls his "25 Useful Tips"—which include such sage advice as "Never buy anything from a broker at an airport"—and his handy "Fool's Glossary," which clarifies many of the technical terms used in the book. Clever, funny, and informative, A Fool and His Money will reward investors at all levels of experience with a revelation on every page.
Customer Reviews

A funny and informative book for the average investors
The lure of easy money in the stock market encourages more and more people to become investors. Mr. Rothchild decides to become one too, and his journey into the financial world is told in this engaging and hilarious book. He does a fantastic job of injecting life into the dull subject of finance and investment. I smile and laugh through much of the book. I like it even more than the classic The Money Game by Adam Smith.

This book was hilarious!
This book is definitely educational and funny! All the tips in the book sound funny but are real. I was laughing so hard from reading this book, my sides hurt...This information although written in 1987/1988 timeframe is definitely timeless! This book was nice break from serious investment books and should not be thought of as less because it is humorous... it kinda reminds you of the humor in the films that Michael Moore creates (although this info is legitimate).

Can the Average Investor Still Make Money??
+++++

This easy-to-read book, by former editor, author, and writer, John Rothchild, is a unique and hilarious book that tells us of his adventure as an average investor in the stock market.

Rothchild's original plan for writing this book was as follows:

"In the late summer of 1985, during an extraordinary bull market [rising market], I decided to drop everything and devote an entire year to learning how to invest, especially in stocks. I resolved to begin at the beginning, finding out as much as I could about the business and how it really operates, meanwhile putting my own funds [of $16,500] into whatever would make the biggest profit. After achieving [this] winning strategy, increasing my net worth, and achieving financial independence [or security], I'd return to tell you how I did it."

Rothchild learned how to invest by doing things such as watching late night television programs "on how to get rich;" going to financial planning places with their money managers; reading newsletters, business publications, and historical financial books; talking to successful investors in order to perhaps learn some inside information; and going to stockbrokers for information on hot stocks, making fully-informed investment decisions, and avoiding irrational markets.

During his journey, Rothchild does a good job in explaining the mechanics of investing especially in the stock market and imparting the psychology behind investing. Even though the author does a good job in explaining terms, I feel knowing some basics on investing before reading this book, will help the potential reader appreciate the humor and practical advice of this book even more. (There are over twenty short useful tips in boldface type peppered throughout this book.)

Finally, the title of this book "A Fool and his Money" gives an indication of what happened to Rothchild's investment. As a consequence, at the very end of this book, Rothchild has a short glossary of major investment and stock market terms that he has defined as a result of his experience. He defines the terms found in this review as follows:

(1) Average Investor: born loser
(2) Bull Market: a time when your neighbor's stocks are going up
(3) Successful investor: liar
(4) Inside information: something you wish they'd tell you; what everybody else has heard
(5) Stockbroker: salesperson for stocks, mutual funds, etc.; a person who will never go broke
(6) Money manager: expert who manages your financial affairs; someone to whom you pay a large fee so you'll have less money to manage
(7) Hot stock: stock everybody is buying; what your brokerage firm calls any stock it wants to sell
(8) Irrational market: a market that isn't doing what you want it too; every market
(9) Fully-informed investment decision: wild guess
(10) Financial security: perpetual care enjoyed by insurance companies, brokers, money managers, and others in the financial security industry.

In conclusion, this is a practical and hilarious book that serves as a warning to the average investor!!

Not Bad But Too Many Typos3
As you can see from the information above, this book is aimed for the non-technical reader. It attempts to give that reader a familiarity with the technical aspects of the electrical power system in the US (first half of the book), and also to give the reader a good understanding of the regulatory issues involved (second half of the book).

I've read most of the first half of the book so far. It's not bad, BUT, I'm amazed that a book put out by the IEEE (that's Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers) has as many annoying typos as this one has. Here are some examples:

1) The book consistently uses the abbreviation "m" to indicate one million, when of course the proper abbreviation is "M" (note the capital letter). This is not a minor point for a non-technical reader, because "m" is the proper abbreviation for one-thousandth, and is used in technical books such as this one all the time, to mean ONE-THOUSANDTH. I don't recall looking at another book of this type that makes this mistake.

2) One of the formulas in the book ends in the superscripted footnote "10". This superscripted "10" is placed directly to the right of the formula's rightmost variable, so it looks like that variable is to be raised to the 10th power.

3) One table in the book, which shows the cost of various fuels in dollars per "MMBTU", is difficult to understand, because the abbreviation "MM", which I believe is meant to stand for one million in this table, is not defined.

Yes, each of these examples appears to be minor, but for the non-technical reader trying to make sense of the technical text, the errors are, at the very least, annoying and misleading. I think the errors could have been corrected if the author or the publisher had employed a proper copy editor for about 8 hours.

It's a decent book, though; and the first half of the book pretty much fulfills its objective.

The book is written for an American reader who might be a manager for an electric utility company, or for someone who might be involved in trading electricity. There is a slight defensive tone about the latter purpose, given the Enron fraud meltdown.

There is an elementary discussion of the physics involved in power generation and transmission. To give the reader a basic understanding of what actually happens. Including the physical limits of a transmission line on the amount of current that it can bear. As well as the transmission losses incurred when selling energy over long distances.

But much of the book deals at a higher level. Notably, explaining how to comply with government regulations, including the various regulatory bodies, where these might be at the Federal or state level. Not surprising, given the Enron scandal, which is still unfolding, and the heightened government scrutiny over the entire utility industry.

Ship Stability for Masters and Mates, Fifth Edition by Capt D R Derrett

Product Description

This well-established textbook has been fully reviewed and updated by a new author to ensure a modern coverage of the contents in depth. A new unique introduction has been written, giving ship types together with their general characteristics, to indicate to the reader actual or typical sizes of modern day merchant vessels.

Four new chapters have been added dealing with Ship Squat, the Deadweight scale, Interaction and The Trim and Stability book. A new section, on Draft Surveys, is included in the Appendices. In order to give the student a better understanding of ship strength, four smaller but more detailed chapters replace the chapter covering this subject area in the previous edition.

Ship Stability, with respect to motions, can be defined as the ability of a ship to return to an initial condition after she has been subjected to disturbing forces and moments. Ship Stability can also exist with respect to materials stresses and forces, where it is the ability to return to an initial state after being subjected to external or internal forces. Careful attention has been paid to the basic principles of ship stability and ship strength. Included is a generous provision of worked examples and exercise questions with answers. These ensure that the maritime student who works through this book will have a clear grasp of the topics covered. Up-to-date syllabuses and recent examination papers are included at the end of this book.

Not Bad But Too Many Typos

Venkatesh Pamu Book Reviews : "The book seems to have been sprung from the author's experiences of teaching and consulting on leadership issues. This is evident from the way in which the approaches and theories to leadership are structured for easy application and practice in active scenarios. A clear positive aspect of the book is the Summary at the end of each chapter with serves the purpose of integrating several dimensions that the chapter deals with."

Brent Davies International Journal of Educational Management : "After reading many current educational leadership books which seem less about leadership and more about the evils of government reform and commodification it is a real delight to read such a splendid book as this. Peter Northouse has combined an academically robust account of the major themes and approaches with an accessible style and approach that makes the book very readable. This book is a major source of insights and perspectives for all those studying on leadership courses in both the business and education sectors. It is also an excellent source for school leaders and educators who want to go deepen their understanding of leadership.

The book is divided into fourteen chapters which cover all the key aspects in the leadership field: defining leadership; trait approaches; skills approaches; style approaches; situational approach; contingency theory; path-goal theory; leader-member exchange theory; transformational leadership; team leadership; psychodynamic approach; women and leadership; culture and leadership and leadership ethics. It is unusual to get such a comprehensive coverage of leadership, with such a perceptive and engaging account.

The layout of the book is excellent making it very reader friendly with great use of colour display of models and tables. This is a major improvement on earlier editions of the book. It has outstandingly good case examples and questions for reflection and very useful leadership instruments and questionnaires. These instruments, case studies and questionnaires provide practical applications and reflection tools and add a significant reality check to theory as the reader can apply the leadership analysis to themselves or their situation. For anyone starting out as a student of leadership or an experienced leader reviewing their leadership style and approach this book would be an essential starting place.

After reviewing leadership books for over twenty years this book is by far one of the best I have come across. It provides an excellent leadership account and discussion for those working in the education and business field."

INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF EDUCATIONAL MANAGEMENT

Too Much Theory
This is a good read and discusses many valuable ideas. That being said, theory and practice are rarely one in the same. While understanding theory may help frame your tactical approach to practice, in and of itself, theory does not translate directly into practice. In my book Leadership Matters...The CEO Survival Manual: WHAT IT TAKES TO REACH THE C-SUITE AND STAY THERE I focus much more on practice than theory. In fact, I spend a decent amount of time debunking conventional theory with practical real world tips for leaders. I would recommend Peter's book for those looking for an introduction to leadership principles on a theoretical basis. However, for those looking for strong actionable advice they may be left wanting more...

A High Quality Book

According to Kurt Lewin, "There is nothing as practical as a good theory". This is an apt comment in reference to Peter Northouse's book "Leadership: Theory and Practice". The author methodically and clearly explained the major theories and concepts of leadership in a readable and easily understandable manner, in a way that readers can easily implement them.

Northouse stresses the need to link leadership with ethics and values and how to apply the leadership concepts and approaches in practical real-life situations in organisations. When leadership theory and concepts are spelled out as clearly and cogently as they are in this book, their application in organisations becomes self-evident. The author does a good job of presenting the leadership process in an easy to read and understand manner that is both useful and practical to all those that are interested in running successful and effective organisations. Novices will be provided a path whilst the seasoned practitioners will find affirmation.

Helpful textbook
This book is used for my Leadership course. It is not too dense, and each chapter follows the same, easy-to-use format. The case studies give more life to the theories presented in each chapter.

Annoying assumptions make it hard jump into this book
I work in the stress analysis department for a large aerospace manufacturer. I got this book because I am interested in developing probabilistic approaches to predicting failure rates for our components, particularly when used in heretofore unexplored environments. I was aware that the marine industry had a long history of attempting just that. I have been working through the book and have found a number of typographical errors (the answers for example 16.1 on 325-326 are incorrect) and the author assumes that you know where some equations come from. I've read several editions of Roark & Young (2nd - 6th) and have no idea where the equations in example 17.1 came from. Perhaps stress analysts who design welds in ships will recognize them but I couldn't find anyone who did. (Is W the section modulus as defined in Bryars, Snyder and Plants? I don't know because W is not defined and subsequent equations don't look familiar either.)

Evan so, the parts of the book that stand alone do an adequate job of explaining and illustrating the concepts and I suspect my goal of learning and developing probabilistic thinking will be reached. I give the author the benefit of the doubt and assume that he wanted me to check his math just to make sure I really understood what I was doing.

Foundations of Differential Calculus by Euler

Product Description

The positive response to the publication of Blanton's English translations of Euler's "Introduction to Analysis of the Infinite" confirmed the relevance of this 240 year old work and encouraged Blanton to translate Euler's "Foundations of Differential Calculus" as well. The current book constitutes just the first 9 out of 27 chapters. The remaining chapters will be published at a later time. With this new translation, Euler's thoughts will not only be more accessible but more widely enjoyed by the mathematical community.

PART 1 OF BOOK
I was disappointed when I opened the box to find a skinny hardcover 6" by 8" book. I was expecting a full blown thick textbook for the price of $60. This is more of a novelty item for those of you who wish to find out how the theory of differentiation started from scratch. The book has the first steps and analysis that lead to the power rule etc. There is lot of useful information but the notations are a bit a different. This is not a text book with problems and solution. There are examples but these examples are nothing like you'd find in a calculus class. I think this book should be sold for $25 tops. Another thing is that when Euler wrote this book, it had 23 chapters, this is only the first 9 chapters so it leaves you shy of the whole picture. There is about 15 pages on solving Linear Differential equations. I have not read the book word per word yet. So for the intelligent ones, there may be more information they could harvest out of this book. This book is definitely over priced!

A Classic and a Current
While Newton (arguably) founded the subject, Euler (pronounced 'oiler') developed all the methods used today in Differential Calculus. Not only was Leonhard Euler the greatest Mathematician of his day (he actually wrote over a quarter of the tracts from the 18th century!), but he wrote in a humbling and readable manner such that anyone with a foundation may approach his proofs. And this text is no different; simply a book any mathematician should own. Truly one of the milestones of Calculus.

Review of purchasing book "Option Trader Handbook"
It was a great book to learn option trading. I higly recommend this book to someone who wants to know option trading.

Very disappointing
I found this book lacked substance and will quickly fade into the dusty shelves of bookstores.

Good Book
I'm an intermediate level options trader. I bought this book for the trade adjustments, and it definitely delivers. I was weak on how or what trade adjustments to make. Reading this book has definitely changed the way I trade. I now have multiple strategies for locking in profits, and repairing loosing positions.

This book isn't for beginners, it's really for intermediate level options traders. I think everyone will learn something from the trade adjustments in this book. Definitely worth the money and time to read it.

From the Inside Flap
Millions of investors have lost trillions of dollars to turbulent markets over the past five years. Millions of others, however, have used innovative strategies to hold their own and even see their portfolios increase in value. Create Your Own Hedge Fund outlines one such strategy using exchange traded funds (ETFs) and options.

ETFs such as DIAMONDs and VIPERS are fast replacing traditional mutual funds among investors attracted by their reduced expenses and increased versatility and variety, along with the fact—critical to the book's strategies—that ETFs trade on exchanges and are optionable. Option writing, on the other hand, has proven to give investors more winning positions, fewer losing positions (with smaller losses when they do occur), and less fluctuation in portfolio value.

Create Your Own Hedge Fund combines the best aspects of both ETFs and options into an investing program that works well in both bull and bear markets, is affordable for the bulk of investors, and provides overall package returns that are steadier and more predictable than those provided by its component pieces. This results-driven book is divided into four parts that fully examine each element:

PART I discusses the foundation of the book's program, Modern Portfolio Theory (MPT), and why MPT makes it difficult, if not impossible, for investors to beat the market. It then introduces the advantages and drawbacks of hedge funds, and how to invest like a hedge fund with less risk and lower cost.

PART II discusses mutual funds, both traditional and newer exchange traded funds, and explains why ETFs are a superior alternative for the majority of investors.

PART III covers the basics and mechanics of options and option writing, a strategy that is historically considered risky but actually entails far less risk than traditional buy-and-hold.

PART IV provides the payoff, explaining how to construct a foundation portfolio and choose an option to write, then providing detailed examples of option writing in action.

Create Your Own Hedge Fund details an uncomplicated investment program that utilizes the best aspects of a hedge fund to provide market-beating returns while significantly reducing risk. Straightforward and understandable, it will show you how to remove heart-stopping swings from your portfolio's performance—without sacrificing the performance itself.

Whether you are new to options and ETFs or a long-time trader, the book details a straightforward, simple-to-follow method of creating a hedged portfolio in any market condition with significant returns."

misleading title and limited strategy
Hedge funds have been in the news lately. Since for the last few years, some have done very well. So it's quite a hot topic. Also true of ETFs, which have proliferated. Wolfinger's title invokes both, in an attempt to attract as large a readership as possible. Alas, the title is somewhat misleading.

The text gives next to nothing about how hedge funds tend to operate. Instead, it is mostly about explaining what ETFs are, and why you might want to own them. One key reason, as furnished by the text, is that you can then write (i.e. sell) covered calls on them. This increases the short term income you can garner from owning an ETF.

Commendably, the author does not recommend buying of options. He says, correctly, that on average, this is a losing game. It is reassuring to read this, for it means that the book is not one of these breathless tales about how to make money quickly.

The explanation of options could have been made 20 years ago. It is fairly limited; meant for a reader with little previous experience in finance. The only truly new material concerns describing ETFs.

The author's strategy is conservative. But in its own way, also limited. To the extent that an efficient market exists for the pricing of the underlying stocks in an ETF, then the covered calls will be priced fairly accurately by Black-Scholes. But if there is an unexpected upside, then your ETF will be sold when the call expires in the money. While if there is an unexpected downside, you retain your ETF and get the call income to reduce your losses. The problem is that if you do this method long enough, you relinquish the unexpected gains. And you end up holding losers.

Should be "Exchange Traded Funds 101"
The newest craze in investment publishing involves something about "hedge funds." These mysterious investment vehicles (to the unsophisticated public) are seen as the investment of choice for the "rich" investor looking for outsized market gains, or a reduction in risk.

The author seemed to be taking advantage of this when he titled the book. In actuality, there is nothing more here than a basic (and I do mean basic), primer on Exchange Traded Funds, and basic options trading strategies (covered calls and short puts).

The first few chapters involve wasted pages on Modern Portfolio theory, the advantage of index funds over mutual funds, and the benefits of ETF's over traditional index funds. Anyone who is knowledgable enough to be interested in hedge fund strategies (ie. statistical arbitrage, relative value, market neutral, etc.) will find nothing here that he or she doesn't already know.

The second half on trading options on ETF's is similarly light on any interesting information. Much basic information on covered calls and short puts is covered. It wouldn't be unfair to call it simplistic.

Unfortunately, the author did not discuss the important concept of implied volatility when discussing writing strategies on ETF's. This makes certain option strategies, that normally are equivalent, less than equal when used on an ETF.

The book correctly states short puts are equivalent to covered calls, when the puts are secured by cash. If you are going to buy 500 shares and write 5 calls, it is simpler to just sell 5 puts, and hold cash to back them up.

But the author neglects to mention that options on indexes often trade at what is called an IV skew. Out of the money calls on ETF's are generally underpriced, while the puts are overpriced. This makes short puts backed by cash superior to covered calls on an ETF. But Lord help you if the market gets caught in a huge sell off, or implied volatility increases.

There was no discussion of identifying when it is prudent to sell options and when it is wise to remain unhedged. It didn't address the various follow ups to covered call/short put strategies when the stock moves adversely.

If you know absolutely nothing about ETF's, and options trading strategies, then you might find this useful. If you are looking for information on hedge fund techniques, look elsewhere.

This book has changed my outlook on investing
The market has always intrigued me. However, following the advice of well meaning, financially secure friends never brought me the success I sought. It turns out that it's much harder to pick winning stocks than I expected. Even the mutual funds I owned were disappointing. "Create Your Own Hedge Fund" really opened my eyes with insight and clear step-by-step guidance in teaching me a profitable, yet safer, way to invest.

The best two skills I gained from this book were: How to build a portfolio and how to make money using one rather simple strategy. This book gave me the necessary confidence to take control of my own finances and provided compelling reasons for doing so. I learned that ETFs (exchange traded funds) are much less expensive to own than what Wolfinger calls 'traditional mutual funds' ...and, on average, make more money.

Wolfinger clearly outlines exactly how to use ETFs and options - a topic that had always scared me. His detailed explanation of how options work convinced me that options are indeed doable. I was also pleasantly surprised to discover that I've been using "options" for years - rain checks at the grocery and auto insurance policies are both essentially options. And the best part - another surprise to me - is that options actually lessen risk. My chances of losing money are now less than they were before.

The author skillfully enables his readers to understand the rationale behind trading decisions with a multitude of examples that make the lessons come to life.

The book also contains useful background information, references and statistics to support the author's ideas. I tried it, and so far, it really works. I make my own decisions now and am happy with the results. Don't be afraid - if I can do it, so can you. As Wolfinger says, I feel like I'm running my own small fund.
