excellent treatment of frequency domain time series methods5
As a time series analyst who studied time series in graduate school when the first edition of Bloomfield's book came out, I really appreciated it. The frequency approach to time series is not natural because we tend to look at the series to see how it changes (fluctuates) over time. This makes the time domain approach very natural. It is only when one sees periodicity in the series and can relate the series to a summation of sine and cosine waves that the frequency domain ideas get appreciated.
Bloomfield introduces Fourier series in a gentle way, making it clear. Concepts are introduced as needed to deal with specific aspects of real time series data.

I particularly liked his treatment of complex demodulation, which could be a very difficult concept to grasp if not presented carefully. But Bloomfield explains it well and provides another way to look at the famous Wolfer sunspot data using an approach based on complex demodulation (assuming a slowly changing period for the series).

The second edition is now out with additional topics and corrections. I have only read the first edition. So my comments only pertain to that edition. This is the best introductory text to frequency domain time series analysis that I have ever read.

Book Info
Goralski sheds some much-needed light on this intricate protocol-policy relationship by offering two important benefits where other routing books fall short. He covers both Juniper and Cisco, and touches on other vendor implementations.

From the Back Cover
Obtain a clear understanding of how routing information and traffic flows on a multivendor network

Routing policies for networks are often complex and not well understood. Many books detail the operation of routing protocols such as OSPF or BGP, but none place the protocols in the context of routing policies and the real world of ISP peering and customer relationships. Once realistic expectations of packet routing behavior are added to the basic routing protocols, routing policies are unavoidable. Fortunately, Walter Goralski sheds some much-needed light on this intricate protocol-policy relationship by offering two important benefits where other routing books fall short.

Goralski covers both Juniper and Cisco, and touches on other vendor implementations. Next, he focuses on real routing policy situations-the way routing domains actually work-instead of just detailing the protocol anatomy. Real-world multivendor configuration examples make this a hands-on guide for the network engineer or administrator who needs to optimize network traffic flows.

Topics covered include:
* Addressing and routing
* Subnets and supernets
* ISP peering and routing policies
* Cisco and Juniper Networks router configuration
* Routing Information Protocol (RIP)
* Configuring RIP, OSPF, IS-IS, and BGP
* Routing policies for all networking situations

About the Author
WALTER J. GORALSKI is an instructor and course developer at Juniper Networks, the number-two vendor of network routing products. Goralski has more than 35 years of experience in data communications, including 14 years at AT&T. He has written seven books on networking topics, the most recent one on optical networking.

great book about routing policy
You cannot find other books have so much infomation about real network description on routing policy. Like IS-IS L2-L1 route leaking, you cannot find so detailed information on other books.

Putting It All Together
Everyone knows Juniper is a routing player. Heck, their best guys came from Cisco. This is the first book I've seen that really nails the tech issues of routing when you have both Juniper and Cisco on your network. I highly recommend it.

Optimal Routing Design (Networking Technology) by Russ White

Product Description

Techniques for optimizing large-scale IP routing operation and managing network growth
Understand the goals of scalable network design, including tradeoffs between network scaling, convergence speed, and resiliency
Learn basic techniques applicable to any network design, including hierarchy, addressing, summarization, and information hiding
Examine the deployment and operation of EIGRP, OSPF, and IS-IS protocols on large-scale networks
Understand when and how to use a BGP core in a large-scale network and how to use BGP to connect to external networks
Apply high availability and fast convergence to achieve 99.999 percent, or “five 9s” network uptime
Secure routing systems with the latest routing protocol security best practices
Understand the various techniques used for carrying routing information through a VPN

Optimal Routing Design provides the tools and techniques, learned through years of experience with network design and deployment, to build a large-scale or scalable IP-routed network. The book takes an easy-to-read approach that is accessible to novice network designers while presenting invaluable, hard-to-find insight that appeals to more advanced-level professionals as well.

Written by experts in the design and deployment of routing protocols, Optimal Routing Design leverages the authors’ extensive experience with thousands of customer cases and network designs. Boiling down years of experience into best practices for building scalable networks, this book presents valuable information on the most common problems network operators face when seeking to turn best effort IP networks into networks that can support Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN)-type availability and reliability.

Beginning with an overview of design fundamentals, the authors discuss the tradeoffs between various competing points of network design, the concepts of hierarchical network design, redistribution, and addressing and summarization. This first part provides specific techniques, usable in all routing protocols, to work around real-world problems. The next part of the book details specific information on deploying each interior gateway protocol (IGP)–including EIGRP, OSPF, and IS-IS–in real-world network environments. Part III covers advanced topics in network design, including border gateway protocol (BGP), high-availability, routing protocol security, and virtual private networks (VPN). Appendixes cover the fundamentals of each routing protocol discussed in the book; include a checklist of questions and design goals that provides network engineers with a useful tool when evaluating a network design; and compare routing protocols strengths and weaknesses to help you decide when to choose one protocol over another or when to switch between protocols.

“The complexity associated with overlaying voice and video onto an IP network involves thinking through latency, jitter, availability, and recovery issues. This text offers keen insights into the fundamentals of network architecture for these converged environments.”

–John Cavanaugh, Distinguished Services Engineer, Cisco Systems®

This book is part of the Networking Technology Series from Cisco Press‚ which offers networking professionals valuable information for constructing efficient networks, understanding new technologies, and building successful careers.

I'm a bit biased....
Okay, so I'm the author, and I'm a bit biased. :-) But, I just wanted to respond to the reviewer, above, who stated the book was all wrong, and about the new OSPF area type. It is a joke. When you're plowing through this much technical material, it's good to laugh at some things.

If you can find real mistakes in the book, things that you think are really wrong with the principles and concepts explained, then please email Cisco Press, or me.

As for the "real world" part, yes, I agree, this book could be more real world, if it weren't already so long, as it is. We're currently discussing a case study only book that would pair with this one, to provide more real world exposure. The problem is that packing the theory and the real world experience stuff into one book would make a book too big to be practical, and readable.

HTH

:-)

Just enough wrong to make you not beleive what is right
I am not as good at english as I am at networking. This is unforturnate as I can't express how bad this book is. There are mistakes, bad diagrams, and just plain bad formatting.
At one point in the book they actually introduce a new OSPF network type: Totally Stubby Not Really Full Areas. After a heading about it and trying to describe it for a paragraph, they end with this: "Actually, this type of area is made up. It does not exist."
I do not read text books to find out what DOESN'T exist.
I did not give it 1 star as some of the ideas are good; of course I strongly recommend trying all the commands first for yourself. The IDEA of this book was exactly what I wanted, and thats how I was sold on it. Forums have proven better.

On the right track, but little detail on dealing with the real world.
Optimal Routing Design is full of good stuff. Full marks for starting the book with the advice "think about what you would like the network to do".

The book contains a wealth of information on how you should design a network if you were starting from scratch. It assists in clarifying the impact of routing protocol configuration choices.

For the operator of an existing network, little information is provided on "how to get there from here". Other issues that aren't really addressed are "Having broken a number of design rules, how far am I from a meltdown?" and "What improvement in service/operating costs/convergence would I see if I followed all the rules?"

Another area that could have seem more material was how map the desired behaviour of the network (traffic flow wise) into design decisions.

Overall a valuable contribution to routing literature. Well done.

Not Bad But Too Many Typos3
As you can see from the information above, this book is aimed for the non-technical reader. It attempts to give that reader a familiarity with the technical aspects of the electrical power system in the US (first half of the book), and also to give the reader a good understanding of the regulatory issues involved (second half of the book).

I've read most of the first half of the book so far. It's not bad, BUT, I'm amazed that a book put out by the IEEE (that's Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers) has as many annoying typos as this one has. Here are some examples:

1) The book consistently uses the abbreviation "m" to indicate one million, when of course the proper abbreviation is "M" (note the capital letter). This is not a minor point for a non-technical reader, because "m" is the proper abbreviation for one-thousandth, and is used in technical books such as this one all the time, to mean ONE-THOUSANDTH. I don't recall looking at another book of this type that makes this mistake.

2) One of the formulas in the book ends in the superscripted footnote "10". This superscripted "10" is placed directly to the right of the formula's rightmost variable, so it looks like that variable is to be raised to the 10th power.

3) One table in the book, which shows the cost of various fuels in dollars per "MMBTU", is difficult to understand, because the abbreviation "MM", which I believe is meant to stand for one million in this table, is not defined.

Yes, each of these examples appears to be minor, but for the non-technical reader trying to make sense of the technical text, the errors are, at the very least, annoying and misleading. I think the errors could have been corrected if the author or the publisher had employed a proper copy editor for about 8 hours.

It's a decent book, though; and the first half of the book pretty much fulfills its objective.

increased govt regulation4
The book is written for an American reader who might be a manager for an electric utility company, or for someone who might be involved in trading electricity. There is a slight defensive tone about the latter purpose, given the Enron fraud meltdown.

There is an elementary discussion of the physics involved in power generation and transmission. To give the reader a basic understanding of what actually happens. Including the physical limits of a transmission line on the amount of current that it can bear. As well as the transmission losses incurred when selling energy over long distances.

But much of the book deals at a higher level. Notably, explaining how to comply with government regulations, including the various regulatory bodies, where these might be at the Federal or state level. Not surprising, given the Enron scandal, which is still unfolding, and the heightened government scrutiny over the entire utility industry.

Ship Stability for Masters and Mates, Fifth Edition by Capt D R Derrett

Product Description

This well-established textbook has been fully reviewed and updated by a new author to ensure a modern coverage of the contents in depth. A new unique introduction has been written, giving ship types together with their general characteristics, to indicate to the reader actual or typical sizes of modern day merchant vessels.

Four new chapters have been added dealing with Ship Squat, the Deadweight scale, Interaction and The Trim and Stability book. A new section, on Draft Surveys, is included in the Appendices. In order to give the student a better understanding of ship strength, four smaller but more detailed chapters replace the chapter covering this subject area in the previous edition.

Ship Stability, with respect to motions, can be defined as the ability of a ship to return to an initial condition after she has been subjected to disturbing forces and moments. Ship Stability can also exist with respect to materials stresses and forces, where it is the ability to return to an initial state after being subjected to external or internal forces. Careful attention has been paid to the basic principles of ship stability and ship strength. Included is a generous provision of worked examples and exercise questions with answers. These ensure that the maritime student who works through this book will have a clear grasp of the topics covered. Up-to-date syllabuses and recent examination papers are included at the end of this book.

Excellent condition
I've got used one. It was nicely packed and the condition of this item was excellent and mint. Only one thing disappointed was delivery time. It took almost 2 months after placing the order. The seller was supposed to ship this one by June 7 and I've got it on around Aug. 8. Even granting that is international mail, I think that was almost taking my neck out(this is a Korean proverb. Direct translation).
Anyway, I am happy to got what I want. Best regards.

Not Bad But Too Many Typos

It's a decent book, though; and the first half of the book pretty much fulfills its objective.

increased govt regulation

'The book that [Terry Galloway] has written is rich in details and science, yet it always maintains an easy, personable nature'
From the Foreword by Gary Gerber

Download Description
Given how long such systems have been around, the average American consumer nevertheless knows little about solar power. That is changing, as growing ecological consciousness and the rising cost of power combine with ever-more-efficient solar powered systems to make a solar power revolution feasible for the first time. The United States has a seemingly insatiable appetite for energy; in fact, if California were a separate nation, its energy consumption alone would place it fourth in the world. In answer to this ever-increasing demand for energy the U.S. government has invested $1.7 billion to the research and development of solar power. This investment played a large role in the solar powered industry becoming a $2.5 billion industry growing in excess of 20% per year. Covering the full life span of the project, from siting issues through specific design features to maintenance of the property and equipment, this book is a comprehensive guide to d

Cool case study, a bit meandering though
If you're looking for the story of one house being built with solar and other "green" technologies, this is a pretty good one. Examples are sometimes the best way to learn. The dedication to scientific perfection in the design and construction of this single house (tile, windows, concrete, automation systems, etc) is what really excited me from chapter to chapter.

However, the book gets a little off-track in several areas. In one section there is at-length discussion about growing vegetables in your solarium. It also veers off into hydrogen and hybrid gas/electric cars for a few pages, which is not really helpful since we've purchased a book entitled "Solar House".

I'd also be inclined to think that a better-organized book with more examples, in more of a "how to" form, would be more useful for the average solar home designer.

I could have used more pictures of the project, too. They never really give us a full 360 view of the house, which, if the book is going to be about one house and how it was built, seems pretty important.

It's a cool book, but there are probably better options out there for those who are going to be getting their hands dirty in the near future.

A newer book based on an older case study
This book describes a single solar house development in 1998. The book is highly academic and written more like a university graduate publication, then a helpful guide for today's "solar designer." There are better books on the market that are better organized and more up-to-date. The book is over-priced for the material presented. I have given it a 3-star review so as not to be too critical. It's an average book at best. The book misleads the potential buyer with it's 2004 publication date.

Solar House review
This is a complete guide to the solar house, with super-efficiency built in! It is a very well thought through design for a super efficient modern solar home. Has a comprehensive menu of things to deal with when designing/building a solar home, including "smart" house features like computerized controls. Very scientific, very informative with lots of examples, photos, charts and graphs.

A must for solar home designers/builders or the interested.

Worth about a million dollars in feasibility research 5
The book is so lucidly organized and illustrated that a low technology mind like mine easily handled it yet it's a far richer and more sophisticated look at ethanol production options, methods, feedstock economics, output economics, etc. than I've found anywhere. Anyone who wants to do something with ethanol should be forced to buy and devour this book before proceeding further (it'll save them years and millions of dollars in actually getting one done.)

Beautiful pictures
Great book with beautiful pictures. I found it very useful for my work. Some of them are a little over the top but an inspiration nonetheless.

Best book for ideas on interiors
My wife and I are getting started on designing the interior of our new home. To this end, I visited three bookstores browsing through about 40 books for ideas on interior decoration. This book stood out as having the most inspiring and tasteful designs, as well as providing a large number and variety of photos, all at a very good price. Highly recommended. As one other reviewer pointed out, written text is limited, but this is made up for by the superior quantity and quality of photos. The book more than serves its purpose. For written guides on interior design, I plan to purchase: "The Home Design Planner" by Katherine Sorrell.

A rich, gorgeous presentation of many examples.
For an outstanding sourcebook of interiors which stand out from the many, DREAM HOMES: 100 INSPIRATIONAL INTERIORS is an exceptional purchase recommended for any discriminating art library strong in interior design titles. No single style represents a 'dream home': it can be Mediterranean, Californian, Asian or a blend. A hundred examples of perfection in all areas are culled from homes of all styles from around the world, presenting the work of the planet's most talented interior designers. There are over 800 lovely color photos of these spaces, plus in-depth explanations by design expert Johanna Thornycroft, which explains how each home was created or transformed. A rich, gorgeous presentation of many examples.

Good book to learn about common pitfalls in analog IC design
I have to somewhat disagree with the other reviewers here. Its true that looking at the first few chapters, there is really nothing new in the book that other books don't cover (actually almost every analog ic book follows the same progression, ie "this is how a pn junction works, how a transistor works, how a mosfet works, how a diff pair works, yadda, yadda"). What I found unique about this book are really the last two chapters about the common pitfalls in analog IC design and some root causes for failure of ICs. As a practising engineer, I had a hard time finding a book that discusses these things, which makes it easier for me to narrow down some of the possible causes when there is a flow in an IC design. Also, it includes an analysis of ESD circuits which I think is uncommon in most general analog IC books.

not very good
The authors have nothing new to say and they do not even present the old stuff well. Given that other excellent books already exist, why would anyone buy this one?

Look elsewhere for BiCMOS circuits
I felt tricked after buying this book. The title suggests coverage of BiCMOS circuits, but in reality the authors cover Bipolar circuits and MOSFET circuits independently. They do not present any new circuits. Instead, they repeat well-known circuits such as bipolar and MOSFET differential pairs! You can find this material in any undergraduate textbook. I'm very surprised that CRC press would publish this book.

A good guidebook on analog circuit design
This is a design handbook for electronic engineering students and practicing engineers interested in learning practical techniques for designing and analyzing analog circuits using the basic building blocks of transistors, diodes, and op-amps. Readers will notice that the author makes some assumptions about the reader - that he or she has been exposed to undergrad courses in electronic devices, signals and systems, and signal processing. This is not a book for hobbyists.

Chapters one and two are introductory in nature. Chapter 1 provides the motivation for analog circuit design in general. Chapter 2 covers some important signal processing concepts that are the basis of material in later chapters. Chapters three through eight cover the bipolar device physics, the BJT, transistor amplifiers, and approximation techniques for bandwidth estimation and switching speed analysis. Chapter nine covers the basics of CMOS and CMOS amplifiers. The bandwidth estimation techniques developed in earlier chapters for amplifer design work well for CMOS devices as well.

Chapter 10 covers transistor switching, as in how you get a transistor to turn on and off quickly, and how you estimate that speed. Chapter 11 reviews feedback systems and Bode plot methods of designing stable feedback systems. The next two chapters discuss the design, use, and limitations of op-amps including voltage-feedback and current-feedback op-amps. Chapter 14 covers the basics of analog low-pass filter design, including ladder and active implementations of Butterworth, Chebyshev, elliptic, and Bessel filters. Chapter 15 switches topics and goes to PC board layout rules and the use and limitations of passive components. Chapter 16 is a mixed bag of useful design techniques and tricks that don't fit into the other chapters. The book contains illustrative analysis problems and MATLAB and PSPICE design examples throughout as well as chapter problem sets.

This book is a nice companion to The Art of Electronics and other such books that act as capstone courses, since it draws on a wide body of electronics knowledge - not just one course. Highly recommended for the practical kind of information and problems you often don't see in textbooks but that you'll require in industry.

Very good analog design text
The book is full of examples and real-world stuff on analog circuit design. Would be a good addition to any designer's library.
