Too confusing
The immunology section of this book is the most convoluted reading I have had in all my readings for the step 1. Frankly, the figures are far superior in explaining what the author is trying to convey. Maybe this book was helpful for others but it just frustrated me and did not expand any more than what was already more concisely described in first aid. Bottom line, not worth the time.

execllent
the immunlogy section is extra ordinary with concise yet comprehensive ! it simplified not only for usmle but also for medical carrier, so it should study first before the other topics.
I think the book needs more thorough answers for usmle questions as most of us purchase for usmle reviews not for text !

Almost excellent
I love this book but the reason i gave this book 4 stars is just because they didn't bother to correct some mistakes of the seventh edition. In this edition (eighth), on page 41 (Chapter 7) Botton note says: Pseudomonas aeruginosa {endotoxin} has the same mode of action. Refering to Diphtheria toxin. It should be {exotoxin}. Another example (to show you a few) is in the same chapter on page 43 table 7-13, it says:
Nervous system
Gram-positive rods:
Clostridium tetani>>>>inhibit acetylcholine release
Clostridium botulinum>>>>inhibit glycine release
As you can see they are mismatched.
So this book is almost perfect, excellent contents but with a few mistakes in some concepts.

Review
"…the first book attempting to review the current bioinformatics literature as it specifically applies to the immune system…should prove valuable to researchers interested in immunogenetics." (Doody's Health Services)

Download Description
This book provides an overview of key conceptual and molecular technologies being deployed in immunogenomics, followed by detailed evaluations of the impact of genomics and systems biology on important areas such as cancer immunology, autoimmunity, allergy and the response to infection.

From the Back Cover
One of the major features that distinguishes vertebrates from invertebrates is the presence of a complex immune system. Over millions of years, many novel immune genes and gene families have emerged and their products form sophisticated pathways conferring protection against most pathogens. The Human Genome Project revealed that the immunoglobulin gene superfamily was one of the largest in the genome, containing more than 20f all known human genes. High-throughput technologies for the study of DNA, mRNA and proteins, such as microarrays and real-time gene amplification technologies, as well as biobank facilities, are enabling the investigation of these genes and pathways in ever more detail. The parallel development of databases and bioinformatics tools to store and interpret this information will also contribute to greater understanding of the function of the immune system.

Genomics is finally changing from an academic discipline to one with real clinical relevance. The study of immune regulation in response to pathogen invasion, to the presence of malignant or allogeneic tissue and, in some cases, to normal autologous tissue requires techniques that study the behaviour of whole systems in parallel. A genome-wide, systems biology approach is needed to understand the genetic and environmental factors that regulate the healthy immune system and its response to pathogens as well as to malignant cells arising within the body. It will also facilitate determining what goes wrong when the immune system attacks normal host cells, as in autoimmune diseases such as Type 1 diabetes.

Finally, greater knowledge of the immune system will enable us to use it to promote health and cure disease, through vaccine development – targeting both pathogens and tumour cells – and by manipulation of cellular and humoral defences.

This book provides an overview of key conceptual and molecular technologies being deployed in immunogenomics, followed by detailed evaluations of the impact of genomics and systems biology on important areas such as cancer immunology, autoimmunity, allergy and the response to infection. It will be of interest to all those working in immunology, as well as to bioinformaticians and specialists such as oncologists and microbiologists.

Clinical Immunology 113(3):345-6, 2004
Immunobiology is, and remains, one of the most comprehensive and clear texts on the subject.

Review
Immunobiology is widely regarded as an outstanding general immunology textbook, equally at home on the bookshelf of an undergraduate as on that of a professor emeritus. Immunobiology is, and remains, one of the most comprehensive and clear texts on the subject, and is of use to a wide audience; this sixth edition is the most impressive one yet.

immunobiology5
This book is, without a doubt, the best introduction for studying the field of immunobiology. Very easy to grasp the concepts without all the hype.

Too dense4
This is a good book if you have a good instructor to give you the big picture, but it is incredibly dense. It goes into too much detail on things like the the long list of proteins involved with a given reaction, but then neglects to explain the overall signficance of the reaction.

Overall excellent text, and great for beginners5
I'm a beginner at immunology, and I have almost no immunological background. My boss, who is a medical doctor that's published and has been cited in this book, recommended this book to me, so that I may catch up to understand his research and build a foundation in immunology.

This is one of the only books I've ever been able to read on my own and actually understand and digest all the material. And everything beyond the first chapter is absolutely new material to me, but this book just made learning immunology easy and fun. It's probably the only textbook I'd ever use as free-reading material and actually enjoy. As one of the reviewers has mentioned, the best feature about this book is the "cartoons" that illustrate pretty complex biological mechanisms. I learn things visually, and I can't emphasize just how well the cartoons help me understand what I can't normally pick up from just reading the text. And, they're also really cutely drawn. From the standpoint of a beginner in Immunology, this book is probably one of the best textbooks.

Killer Lymphocytes by Gideon Berke

Product Description

We have known about the existence of killer lymphocytes since 1960, when they were discovered in connection with transplant rejection in vivo. Since then we have uncovered at least five subsets of lymphocytes that can kill other cells in vitro, establishing the study of cell-mediated cytotoxicity (CMC) as a major field of immunological inquiry. Berke and Clark summarize the extensive literature based on the study of CMC in vitro. Several important questions about killer cells have now been answered, for example, how they go about destroying other cells. Research ultimately revealed at least three lytic mechanisms available to killer lymphocytes. But do killer cells actually use these mechanisms in vivo? The possible involvement of CMC in transplant rejection, control of intracellular parasites, cancer, autoimmunity, and immune homeostatic regulation is analyzed in detail, yielding some surprising findings, and outlining important questions that remain unanswered.

This extensively documented, comprehensive survey of cell-mediated cytotoxicity traces the history of killer lymphocytes from 1960 to the present, providing a definitive resource for specialists and non-specialists alike.

Genetics: An Issue of Immunology and Allergy Clinics (The Clinics: Internal Medicine) by Deborah Meyers

Product Description

Significant progress has been made in understanding the pathogenesis of many allergic disorders. In spite of the tremendous complexity, dramatic progress in the past few years has led to an improved understanding of the genetic contributions to allergic and immunoregulatory disorders. This issue is divided into four parts: reviews of positional cloned genes from family studies, gene-environment interactions, gene-by-gene interactions, and future directions.
