Must read for both HR and Line Managers doing Total Rewards5
This book is written more for Line Managers, than for HR professionals, but will benefit both when implementing a Total Rewards strategy. The book is tight and as succint as it can be to cover a multifaceted management system in as few pages as it does. It also serves as a reference for any organization that seeks to attract, retain, and motivate the most qualified and capable human capital during the "War for Talent" that is upon us.

Hay Group's use of evidence based research to underscore concepts is a key strength of this book as well.

Greate Management 101 book5
Practical approach to management. This book shows the application of good management practices using real-world scenarios. It is easy to read and written in such a way that you can instantly start applying its concepts in your environment.

Practical Indeed!5
I am very skeptical of most business improvement books and one size fits all methodologies, but I can tell you that this book absolutely shines as a glint of hope in the sea of business improvement noise. As opposed to trying to force a given technique that will apply to everyone in every business, this book provides some very "real" examples that exist in the software development world and some very simple concepts and techniques that can be used. This book is not written like an academic book of problems and solutions, but more of a story based book on a "real world" scenario, which truly solidifies the pragmatic name of the publisher. This pragmatic approach makes the book very easy to read, understand, and ultimately use. I think if you use at least one or two of the techniques presented in this book such as One-on-Ones and Big Visual Charts (BVCs) that the book will have more than paid for itself in terms of the time you will have spent reading it and of course the money!

Excellent Guide for New and Seasoned Managers of Knowledge Workers5
This is an excellent work that guided me though my first formal management experience. The book weaves its lessons into a story which helped you to understand how to apply what you learned. Like many important books, it explains some simple rules that can be difficult to execute in practice. The downside of reading this book is that you may realized that you're not being managed well (or have not been in the past) and you can no longer live in blissful ignorance. All technical managers at all levels should have read a copy of this book. The section on having one on ones by itself is worth the price.

The One Minute Manager

Product Description

The blockbuster #1 national bestselling phenomenon is back... not that it ever really went away. An easily-read story which quickly demonstrates three very practical management techniques, it also includes information on several studies in medicine and in the behavioral sciences, which help readers understand why these apparently simple methods work so well with so many people. The book is brief, the language is simple, and best of all...it works.

From AudioFile
After a heartfelt introduction by the authors, Eric Conger reads the now famous parable with perfect tempo and emotional pitch. The basic lesson is on how to concisely communicate goals, praise, and correction. Though focused on method, the underlying message is that people want to be managed and tend to flounder when their efforts are not directed and nurtured. The program is a reminder that quality work doesn't happen without organized and disciplined leadership. People need challenging and worthwhile goals, respect, emotional security, and a sense of being part of a community that makes them feel connected and invested. That this shouldn't take huge amounts of time is the key contribution of this audio, which ought to be on everyone's "top 10" list of management guides. Good book for the first time manager5
The OMM presents a set of tools that a manager needs to use to do his or her job well. The book is short and sweet. It gets to the point without wasting time.

Management musts!5
The One Minute Manager is an oldie and a goodie. It's been a fun book to watch over the years as new generations of managers entering the workforce are exposed to it. I recently bought a copy for a new manager that reports to me, and bought the Amazon recommended title Squawk!: How to Stop Making Noise and Start Getting Results along with it.

It turns out Squawk! is a new book that's also for managers, and let's just say I read it while my subordinate was reading The One Minute Manager. I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks. Both are great books and they're short enough that I suggest following Amazon's recommendation and getting them together at a discount.

Great for new leaders4
This book is perfect for the new leader that needs the basics, as well as the seasoned manager just looking to freshen up their skills. It is a must have in any learning library!

There are better books available3
I was hoping this would take the "Effective Phrases for Performance Appraisals" a little bit further in content. Unfortunately, it didn't deliver like I had expected. I consult other aids before this one.

helped my wife a lot4
we bought this and 2 other related books to help my wife with her employee performance reviews. before i use to just help her out but since her team grew and our schedules were just to hectic, i didn't have time to help her out. so this and the two other related books helped a lot.

BJH4
This is a very helpful book when you need to write your own perfomance objectives. It is also useful if you are a manger writing objectives for your staff.
