Skip This Book, No Bible Here1
I have used the bible series books before with great success, but this one falls seriously short. It's amazing how 700+ pages just don't cut it. I would however recommend instead... Noel/Spence's "Microsoft SharePoint 2007 Unleashed" published by SAMS.

Not thorough-mostly info available for free from Microsoft Office Online1
Skip it-Real basic stuff already available for free from Microsoft online and covered in more useful detail. Definitely not up to the title Sharepoint Bible. There are much better Sharepoint resources for your money that cover scenarios that represent real world tasks you are likely to come across that aren't just a single point & click in the Sharepoint. http://www.amazon.com/Real-World-SharePoint-2007-Indispensable/dp/0470168358 is one example I do recommend.

Good reference for End Users3
I was reccomended this book by a collegue as the only book I would need to get up to speed on MOSS. That was not a very good reccomendation. It is very weak on the setup, configuration and Share Service Provider aspects of managing a MOSS environment. It also has nothing of relevance on doing Web Parts.
What is is very strong in is end user tasks, such as building and maintaining list and document libraries. It also has some great content on customizing the envrinment and branding. The SharePoint Designer is also introduced as well.
If you are a normal office worker who is responsible for maintaining the content for your group or team, this is an excellent book. If you are a network admin or a developer this would be a good book to have, but do not expect anything very deep.

Good User Guide4
I bought this book when I was planning our SharePoint deployment and intended for it to be used by our users who will be more active in the everyday use of the site. I haven't come across anything that a normal SharePoint user would want to do that is not clearly explained in this book. Lots of good content for everyone.

Great reference book4
I bought this book to help me on supporting SharePoint on the fly. So far, it has saved my behind. All the quick, basic, get-to-know-right-away stuff is all in here.

Great Reference Book while doing Sharepoint Deployments4
I bought the first version of this book back in Feburary for my 2nd Customer Deployment of Sharepoint. There are several things you may already know about Sharepoint Designer, but I found this book best used by intermediaries; as Reference Material.
For Beginners I also recomend to have and take the time to use the book because there will be things that will make more sense when you are presented with Business Case situations.
I put the book down for a month and now have started a 3rd customer deployment for a Bio-Tech company that wants to control workflows. Now I am re-referencing the book for additional triggers.
Down the road I can see using Data-Sources to create reports connected to Oracle DBs, but there is not a need right now or security access.
Hence the reference material.

If you are the Cheif Designer-Dev of a Sharpeoint Implementation this book is a must have for the miger cost.

Great book5
This is a great book to have as a resource for not only some of the new features of Excel 2007, but also as a primer to what a data warehouse is and what it means to build one. Of course, the latter is something that can be learned in depth in many other texts, but for a user of Excel, it makes for a good launching point to other more complex concepts of data warehouses and BI (Business Intelligence).

There are many great examples that can simply make spreadsheets look and work better regardless of whether you are building a dashboard or not.

This is a good book.

Business Intelligence is a broad and many times an incorrectly used term. My opinion is that in essence, Business Intelligence is all about getting information into the hands of business users so they can make decisions.

This book is written for the business user. Microsoft is the fastest growing player in the Business Intelligence world. Their strategy is to leverage Microsoft Office to get the information into the hands of the business users. For example, think of how many people use Excel in the business place. That is a huge number of people to tap into who will already know how to use their Business Intelligence tools.

The book uses a diagram to show the Microsoft Business Intelligence platform. Each chapter then focuses in on a section of the diagram. It gives you a "you are here" pointer in the diagram. It gives you and explanation and then an example of how to do the important and common tasks. Each chapter is also independent of the other chapter, so you focus in on what you need to know with no worries that you missed something important in a previous chapter.

I am a Senior Business Intelligence Developer. I build the Data Warehouse and Data Cubes and develop the ETL. I have enough on my plate to keep me busy, but I still need to know all aspects of the platform. If you are a developer, I recommend this book because it gives you enough information to get you up to speed with Office 2007 as it relates to BI quickly. It shows you how to get your KPI's into SharePoint, for example. I recommend the book for developers as well.

Good Concise Review5
This book provided a great, easy to understand review of the features of Office 2007. Touched upon pivot tables, performance point, dashboards and scorecards. Plenty of examples were provided. This will definitely help me with implementing executive dashboards at my company.

Excellent book for the government contractor5
While I have considered myself reasonably good with Office, this book dramatically increased my understanding of the power hidden in Excel and the new possibilities of presentation. I would highly recommend the book to any government contractor, even if you haven't upgraded to Office 2007 as the descriptive text and easy to follow examples have direct application to earlier versions as well. I've cut my production time dramatically and, more importantly, can 'slice and dice' the data quicker and with better insight than ever before.

Great Jumpstart for Newcomers To SharePoint Designer4
SharePoint Designer Tutorial. SharePoint Designer Tutorial is a straightforward hands on book targeted at the SharePoint Designer novice looking for a frills approach to becoming productive with SharePoint Designer. Focusing on building a business site in SharePoint with the aid of Designer, SharePoint Designer Tutorial walks you through a series of hands on exercises that when followed from end to end will help you not only build a robust site but will furthermore help you gain the skills to re-use in extending your SharePoint solutions. Concise and to the point at 166 pages the book is a great jumpstart for anyone looking to get comfortable with SharePoint Designer.

Not sure who this book is for.2
Got this book to review to see if it was worthwhile for our end users, so my review is focused on that.

The book spends the first half going into basic what are the toolbars, what is HTML, CSS, etc. The stuff every new user book contains.
The examples are good, full of pictures and simple step processes. The examples are simple and make no real use of Sharepoint vs any web server, with the end result being a page for a wine company using master pages and displaying a table with wines and prices, hardcoded.
Good information for someone who wants to create their own pages above what the Edit Page provides.

After that it starts getting bad where the users are given examples where they need to install web parts and that they need to edit the web.config and configuring MS-Exchange. At that point we have passed the point of end user getting extra capability out for Sharepoint and gone into advanced computer user who have installed sharepoint, are familiar with web.config and other such configuration files.

Other bad items.

The previous wine page is gone and all example, like display the wine from a sharepoint list just do it to a blank page. There is a difference from making your site not look like Sharepoint to ignoring master pages and other functionaly that user expect from a Sharepoint page.
Workflows rate around 2 pages with a simple if this person edits an item send email but this is just shown not really exampled.
Example to display data are simple, with a simple example of conditional formating, xpath, and other items dealing with displaying data in lists.
There is no coverage about modifing the New form and Edit form for lists.

From the stand point of giving this to advanced end users and hoping I stop getting requests to do simple things like display a list with conditional formating I don't see this book helping them or me with that. The text and demos on the Microsoft site do a better job.

Well written. Good tips. Too short. Not a reference book. Hardly a "complete" guide.

I found most of the book to be fairly basic, but I am experienced in designing standards-compliant sites using the tools and technologies Tessa uses (PHP, CSS, XHTML, Dreamweaver, Photoshop, etc..). I suspect that others with similar backgrounds would find this book not so helpful. For those just starting with CSS and XHTML, this book would be a good starting point though. It is filled with good advice (the best advice is to use standards-based approaches and to separate content from design) and lots of tips ranging from SEO to Photoshop techniques.

With Tessa's conversational writing approach, you feel that she's your tutor who genuinely wants you to create great, standards-compliant WordPress themes. She talks with you and not at you making the book easy to read and understand. Some key highlights include:

1. Rapid Design Comping - which is a design process coined by Tessa that takes you through ten steps of the design process from sketching to production.

2. Great section on font choices and why you might use one font over another.

3. A good discussion on validating pages through the W3C's XHTML and CSS validation services.

4. A good introduction on WordPress' template hierarchy. This is very important to understand when developing WP themes. I would have liked an entire chapter on this, though.

One thing I found totally absent (aside from a quick mention in a sidebar note) is a discussion and walkthrough of WordPress' OOP design. Just as it is important as a WP theme developer to understand the template system, good CSS, and XHTML, it is equally important to understand WP's object oriented design. An entire chapter, early on in the book, could have been written to discuss this. Tessa would have made it simple and easy to understand, I am sure.

I would have liked a better reference section. With a better reference section, I would be more apt to keep the book on my desk. As it is now, it will likely sit on the shelf never to be read again!

Tessa creates a single theme in the book (an Open Source Magazine), and although most of the techniques apply across many different types of themes, having a few counter examples would get you started more quickly.

One key point not stressed enough in her text is the notion of reusability. The WordPress architecture makes it highly reusable (not just flexible) so that you can call a single function under different circumstances to bring back data for different contexts. This is a powerful design feature (well known to those object-oriented developer types) that can save you time and effort, while delivering consistent and predictable results. As I have used WordPress now on several of my sites, I find this to be one of its strongest assets. When developing new themes, I feel that this point should be made crystal clear.

Additionally, I think that a better discussion on some of WP's core functions, and perhaps how they can and should be implemented, should have been included.

All said, this is pretty good starter book. As an experienced developer (not a WP theme developer though), I didn't get much out of it.

Good Book. A must for theming5
I think this is a very good book, because it is the only book on theme design for WordPress. I used it together with the DVD "How to Theme WordPress" by Aleks Monahan. The topic is very hard to find practical and organized information on, so I'm very glad I found those 2 resources. The book takes longer to read and go through, so I switched from the book to the DVD to get a boost in speed, because the DVD was much easier to watch. The DVD takes 2 hours to go through, and I felt confident afterwards to go ahead and start my own project. I will likely be referring to the book later when I have more time to read it. But in general, I think the 2 go hand in hand.

WordPress Theme Design is a winner.4
I am pretty impressed with this book. It is easy to read and follow. I have been working with WordPress for quite a while and developed several plugins. I bought this book to help me with Theme Design which I hadn't done previously. I was a bit surprised to find quite a few things I didn't know about WordPress itself in addition to an excellent explanation on theme design and how themes work in the context of WordPress.

This book isn't magic though - designing a theme for WordPress still requires a reasonable understanding of PHP.

A novel look at the power of Excel!5
A novel look at the power of Excel. Great for people new to Excel2007, but also easily transferable to Excel2003. I had no idea it was this easy to develop amazing visual applications in Excel - The seamlessness of integration between Excel and other applications as well as the Internet was a new one for me as well.

I'm a Psychology Professor, and not in any way an "excel geek" and I found this book approachable, useful, and surprising! It's a relief to finally have something like this on my desk. Where have books like this been all this time?"

SO USEFUL! Broad application possibilites.5
I had no idea what Excel could do for me before reading this book. I'm in the field of medicine. I was able to create a customizable interface for large research experiments. This allowed me to do repeated experiments with variable numbers of groups, subjects and variables.

I automatically generated worksheets for data entry, statistical analysis, and elegant methods to present this data (including color, legends, error bars, etc.).

This made my work so much more efficient and my life SO MUCH EASIER!

Great Jumpstart for Newcomers To SharePoint Designer4

Got this book to review to see if it was worthwhile for our end users, so my review is focused on that.

The book spends the first half going into basic what are the toolbars, what is HTML, CSS, etc. The stuff every new user book contains.
The examples are good, full of pictures and simple step processes. The examples are simple and make no real use of Sharepoint vs any web server, with the end result being a page for a wine company using master pages and displaying a table with wines and prices, hardcoded.
Good information for someone who wants to create their own pages above what the Edit Page provides.

After that it starts getting bad where the users are given examples where they need to install web parts and that they need to edit the web.config and configuring MS-Exchange. At that point we have passed the point of end user getting extra capability out for Sharepoint and gone into advanced computer user who have installed sharepoint, are familiar with web.config and other such configuration files.

Other bad items.

The previous wine page is gone and all example, like display the wine from a sharepoint list just do it to a blank page. There is a difference from making your site not look like Sharepoint to ignoring master pages and other functionaly that user expect from a Sharepoint page.
Workflows rate around 2 pages with a simple if this person edits an item send email but this is just shown not really exampled.
Example to display data are simple, with a simple example of conditional formating, xpath, and other items dealing with displaying data in lists.
There is no coverage about modifing the New form and Edit form for lists.

From the stand point of giving this to advanced end users and hoping I stop getting requests to do simple things like display a list with conditional formating I don't see this book helping them or me with that. The text and demos on the Microsoft site do a better job.
