About the Author
William R. Parkhurst, Ph.D., CCIE is the manager of the CCIE Development group at Cisco Systems(r). The CCIE Development group is responsible for all new CCIE written qualification and laboratory exams. Prior to joining the CCIE team, Bill was a Consulting Systems Engineer supporting the Sprint Operation. He first became associated with Cisco Systems while a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Wichita State University. In conjunction with Cisco Systems, WSU established the first CCIE Preparation Laboratory. Parkhurst is the author of several networking books, including Cisco BGP-4 Command and Configuration Reference, published by Cisco Press.

Great resource for OSPF commands
CiscoPress's "OSPF Command and Configuration Handbook" by Dr. Parkhurst is simply a great book. Don't get me wrong, you are not going to walk away from this book understand the underlying root-theory of OSPF. You will need a basic understanding of OSPF to properly benefit from this book - it's not OSPF-101. Nor will you find a whole and complete, complex OSPF config. What you will find is nearly every major OSPF command at the time of the book's printing. This book is both a compliment to any Network Administrator or a candidate for the CCIE R&S lab.
The book does an excellent job at breaking down the major categories of OSPF commands (neighbor commands, network commands, the difference types of default route generation, etc...). The book also does a superb job at showing the dangers and pitfalls of OSPF demand-circuit (certainly a likely area to study for the CCIE lab). What I particularly enjoy is each command is broken down both by command structure and then used in a configuration (the config is amended to only show the command and other relevant commands). This way you have a fuller appreciation of the command being used in context.
Some typos that I notice:
Page 193 - what is documented as Loopback 0 should be Loopback 1.
Page 321 - the book incorrectly discusses the use of the subnet command. The book asserts that if the subnet command is not used, that non-classful subnets will be redistributed. This is simply not true and is, indeed the reason for the subnet command - to redistribute non-classful subnets.
Page 415 - frame-relay map statements must be made for the other DLCIs to establish an OSPF neighbor relationship.
Overall, I love the concept of this book. I wish CiscoPress would come out with more books like this. They provide a value in that they discuss commands in ways not found in other CiscoPress books or the Cisco website.

Good simple examples to help learning ospf commands
This book doesn't tell you the theory of OSPF, but it fits my purpose well - to use 2-3 routers to test out OSPF commands! The description and examples are comprehensive and will not lose you.
Definitely it will help me in studying CCIE. (4.5 stars)

A decent book, just not for the CCIE lab4
CiscoPress's "Troubleshooting IP Routing Protocols" by Shamim, Azis, Liu and Martey is mislabeled. CiscoPress has labeled this book as part of their `CCIE Professional Development' series - I really do not see the value of placing this book in the same vein as other CCIE books in the series (such as Doyle, Solie, & Clark). However, having been employed as a Network Administrator for a number of years, the book does help troubleshoot and isolate routing protocol issues.
Each major IGP (RIP, IGRP, EIGRP, OSPF & IS-IS) along with PIM and BGP is discussed at depth. Each routing protocol is dedicated 2 chapters - one chapter discussing the protocol and one chapter discussing troubleshooting methodologies. The troubleshooting chapters start out with flow charts that can help isolate the issue. Too be honest though, the flow-charts are lacking in depth, and I found only helped verify simple routing issues. The book is also missing a much needed chapter on route redistribution.
There are not that many typos in the book. I give this book four stars as it takes a unique approach to troubleshooting routing protocol issues. However, I fail to find the reason this book needs to be on a CCIE's bookshelf.

Good book on IP routing troubleshooting.5
This book is so far is the best out there on troubleshooting IP routing protocols. If you want to learn the theory behind each modern routing protocol (RIP, EIGRP, OSPF, IS-IS, and BGP), and therefore spend less time on troubleshooting in the first place, check out "Cisco IOS for IP Routing" by Andrew Colton. These two together should take you a long way to a good understaning of Cisco IP routing.

Though initially overwhelming, such thoroughness is what's demanded of those who ultimately pass the Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) exam, the bruising test for which Routing TCP/IP, Volume 1 serves as preparatory material.

Routing TCP/IP Volume I Still Awesome and relevant!!!5
I recently purchased this book based on the rave reviews even with an updated second edition off the press. I can honestly say that this book is Awesome in detail and explanation and is still extremely relevant to understanding the how too's and processes involved in routing tcp/ip. The most amazing feature about this book is how well explained and the book makes topics that would normally seem dificult or confusing easily understood, in other words grandma could learn how routing tcp/ip works from reading this book!

The best way to understand the world of IGPs5
If any book was ever considered as the MUST HAVE BIBLE for Interior Routing Protocols - then Jeff Doyle's first effort on IGPs is THE book (how many cliché's do you want in one sentence)!! The book goes through at a very even pace - dissecting and describing the majority of both open-standard IGPs (OSPF, RIP and a little on ISIS) and Cisco-proprietary IGPs (IGRP and it's beefier brother - EIGRP). The book also includes some invaluable appendixes - including tutorials on working with Binary and hex.
But let's focus on the book's main reason for being - explaining IGPs. Take for instance OSPF - one of the most popular and widely implemented routing protocols in use today. On page 416-417, the book correctly discusses virtual links as a type of network type. The OSPF chapter typically employs 5-8 routers (and shows the required configs). Such a daunting exercise may at first seem like overkill, but Doyle is able to show how (and why) the all these router configs are necessary (to show, for instance, how they interact with or whether a DR or BDR). The book does have it's typos though, as the table on page 484 incorrectly documents stub networks as allowing type 5 and 7 LSAs (not so - thus a stub!)
I cannot imagine there are many CCIEs out there that do not have this book on their bookshelf.
