About the Author
Dr. Robert M. Monczka is director of Strategic Sourcing and Supply Chain Strategy Research at The Center for Advanced Purchasing Studies (CAPS); distinguished research professor of Supply Chain Management at The College of Business at Arizona State University(ASU); and National Association of Purchasing Management professor at ASU. He also is professor emeritus at The Eli Broad Graduate School of Management, Michigan State University. For over 25 years, Dr. Monczka has researched, taught and consulted about strategic purchasing/sourcing and supply chain management strategies and implementation processes. He directed and led a "first-of-its-kind" third-party benchmarking initiative and has been principle investigator on two major National Science Foundation projects in the area of procurement and supply chain best strategy and practice. Over the years, he has advised senior executives in more than 200 of the Fortune 500 companies worldwide. He is leading CAPS Research Project 10X aimed at breakthrough performance improvements. Dr. Monczka has authored six books and over 100 publications throughout his career. He is contributing editor on sourcing strategy for PURCHASING MAGAZINE and associate editor of the JOURNAL OF SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT.
Dr. Robert Trent is the supply chain management program director and associate professor of management at Lehigh University, where he teaches at the undergraduate and graduate levels. He has a BS in materials logistics management from Michigan State University, an MBA from Wayne State University, and a PhD in purchasing/operations management from Michigan State University. Prior to his return to academia, Dr. Trent spent seven years with Chrysler Corporation. His industrial experience includes assignments in production scheduling, packaging engineering with responsibility for new part packaging set-up and the purchase of nonproductive materials, distribution planning, and operations management at the Boston regional parts distribution facility. He also has worked on numerous special project assignments.
Robert B. Handfield is the Bank of America Distinguished University Professor of Supply Chain Management in the College of Management at North Carolina State University. He also is the founder and director of the Supply Chain Management Resource Center at North Carolina State (http://scm.ncsu.edu). Professor Handfield is known for his expertise in supply chain management, new product development, and environmental management. He earned a Bachelor of Science in applied mathematics and statistics in 1985 from the University of British Columbia, and his doctorate in operations management in 1990 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His research focuses on field research with firms deploying supply chain management, new product development, and B2B initiatives. His research in these areas has been published in journals such as the SLOAN MANAGEMENT REVIEW, CALIFORNIA MANAGEMENT REVIEW, JOURNAL OF OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT, DECISION SCIENCE, JOURNAL OF PRODUCT INNOVATION MANAGEMENT, and IEEE TRANSACTIONS IN ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT. He serves as an associate editor for the JOURNAL OF OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT. He is a co-author of three books on strategic sourcing and supply chain management, including INTRODUCTION TO SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT (Prentice Hall, 1998), PURCHASING AND SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT (Southwestern College Publishing, 1997), and SUPPLIER INTEGRATION IN NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT (ASQ, 2000). He is a frequent speaker at professional conferences, and has extensive consulting experience with a number of global organizations, including General Motors, Federal Express, Cabot, Reliant Energy, Vitro Corporativo, Colgate Palmolive, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Steelcase, Johnson Controls, Turkish Petroleum, NSK Corporation, Union Pacific, and Mead Corporation.
