Review
"The book is highly recommended for almost anyone involved in trading, forecasting, or studying the markets." (Technical Analyst, July/August 2005)
From the Inside Flap
When mechanical trading systems were first introduced into the arsenal of trading tools, the trader interested in utilizing these tools would have needed programming expertise, a strong background in mathematical technical analysis, and iron-willed discipline. Today, trading system software developed by market-data vendors has become so user-friendly, that nonprogrammers with only a rudimentary understanding of mathematical technical analysis can successfully create and backtest simple trading systems like those offered throughout this book.
In Mechanical Trading Systems, Richard Weissman uses his experiences as a trader and trading systems expert to take this concept to a new level. Filled with in-depth insight and practical advice, this book examines the development process for choosing and using mechanical trading techniques in conjunction with trader psychology. Mechanical Trading Systems skillfully explores the dangers in system development and how to avoid them; how backtesting and forward testing of trading systems aids in quantification of price risk; and the methods of improving rates of return on investments without significantly increasing risk. It also provides a detailed examination of the personality traits common to the three basic types of trader—trend-following (long to intermediate term), mean reversion (intermediate-term), and short-term (swing and day traders)—and illustrates how a strict adherence to specific types of trading systems can foster a psychological flexibility that will allow you to succeed in all kinds of trading environments: countertrending, choppy, or trending.
Some of the other issues discussed within these pages include:
* Why mathematical technical analysis is anideal building block in the development of mechanical trading systems
* How various flaws in trader psychology—fearfulness, impatience, greed, and lack of discipline—can be overcome
* The pros and cons of various traditional price risk management methods, such as stop loss and volumetric price risk management
* The psychological aspects of price risk management and how utilization of mechanical trading systems can aid in fostering confidence during drawdowns
* How your knowledge and experience can be utilized within the framework of a mechanical trading system
Mechanical Trading Systems offers a wide variety of flexible trading systems that combine sophisticated technical analysis with trading psychology theory. If you plan on improving your trading skills, this comprehensive resource can help you succeed.

From the Inside Flap
How long will it take you to become a competent trader and how much will it cost?
What markets should you trade and how much can you expect to make?
What rules should you set, what methods should you use, how should you split your trading capital?
If these questions interest you, you picked the right book. Written by a professional trader, an expert in technical analysis, and a practicing psychiatrist, Come Into My Trading Room: A Complete Guide to Trading comes out nine years after Dr. Alexander Elder’s international bestseller Trading for a Living, reflecting his latest discoveries and concepts.
Come Into My Trading Room opens with a brief primer–aptly named Financial Trading for Babes in the Woods–aimed at newcomers, but containing important information for experienced traders. It clarifies topics whose mastery is essential for everyone: what markets to trade, how to interpret financial theories, and how to handle common barriers to success.
Moving up from the basics to the heart and soul of Dr. Elder’s methods, Come Into My Trading Room teaches the three key aspects of trading–Mind, Method, and Money. First, you see that the key to winning is in your mind–discipline. Then you learn how to find the best trades and make the most efficient entry and exit decisions. Dr. Elder shares his favorite analytic tools and covers system testing, day-trading, as well as longer-term swing trading, his new Impulse trading system, and a new SafeZone method for placing stops. These methods will allow you to trade with a high level of confidence in any market–stocks, futures, options, or currencies.
Moving beyond technical analysis, Dr. Elder teaches you the rules of money management that are essential for your survival and success. He shows how to structure your account like a submarine, divided into many compartments, so that it won’t sink if one section becomes flooded. The next section of this comprehensive trading guide–The Organized Trader–takes you where no trading book has ever gone before. It teaches you how to organize your time and effort. You learn to select markets and design a decision-making tree. Good records help you learn from your experiences and rise to a higher level of expertise. Dr. Elder clearly outlines four types of records–three of them looking back and
one looking forward–that are essential for any serious trader.
In the final section of this book, Dr. Elder delivers another first in trading literature–he invites you into his trading room and takes you with him on half a dozen of his recent trades, illustrating entries and exits with charts.
Distilling twenty years of trading and teaching experience, this book will put you on the road to mastering a new way of trading stocks, futures, options, and currencies. By the time you leave Dr. Elder’s trading room, you’ll be in a position to take your trading to a higher, more intelligent, and successful level.

Excellent book!5
I read Trading for a Living a few years ago and was amazed by the author's insight into the trader's mind. In this book I did find some common material but it served more as a refresher than a repeat. There is a lot more new information (SafeZone stops, money management, other markets etc) This book works great for both long term as well as short term traders. Knowledge is everything and learning from mistakes is priceless. Truly an amazing book and I can imagine a lot of traders reading it and feeling it was written for them. Also, the author recommends not blindly following his examples but learning from them and fine tuning the indicators to suit our needs. All in all, a great book!
Review from a professional Forex trader5
Simply the finest book on trading I have read to date. I credit this book with being a large part of why I went from consistently losing on trades, to consistently making profits. I think that traders in any market would benefit from this book, and if you don't learn valuable lessons from this book you simply aren't trying. The sections on triple screen trading are worth the price of admission alone. I've read a lot of lousy trading books, so I though it was worth posting my very first review for the best.
Great book5
I think that it is very difficult to give the right information for such a matter, but dr. Elder has succeeded in saying the right thinks in the right way, even to a person like me that is almost a beginner in the trading affair. Really great.

From the Inside Flap
Commodity Trading Advisors (CTAs) use proprietary trading programs that buy and sell commodities and financial futures around the globe. Different than hedge fund and long-only portfolio managers, they don’t follow any stock or bond market trends, but rather, attempt to seize opportunities in a variety of commodity and financial futures markets. The investment potential of CTAs is undeniable, yet little has been done to study their performance in detail--until now.
In Commodity Trading Advisors: Risk, Performance Analysis, and Selection editors Greg Gregoriou, Vassilios Karavas, François-Serge Lhabitant, and Fabrice Rouah bring together the best minds in the business to analyze CTAs from both a quantitative and qualitative perspective. Divided into four comprehensive sections--Performance; Risk and Managed Futures Investing; Managed Futures Investing, Fees, and Regulation; and Program Evaluation, Selection, Diversification, and Returns--this unique resource contains articles that cover a wide range of CTA issues, including:
* The performance of CTAs in changing market conditions
* Simple and cross efficiency of CTAs using data envelopment analysis
* The effect of large hedge fund and CTA trading on futures market volatility
* Measuring the long volatility strategies of managed futures
* Managed futures funds and other fiduciary products
* Choosing the right CTA
* How to design a commodity trading futures program
Although much of the information related to CTAs can be technical in nature, Commodity Trading Advisors distills the knowledge of experts within this field in the most straightforward and accessible way possible. You’ll become familiar with many of the benefits and risks associated with CTAs as well as the risk/return characteristics of a number of different strategies implemented by them. You’ll also learn about important CTA selection and monitoring issues, such as evaluation, returns, and tracking.
Filled with in-depth insights and practical advice, Commodity Trading Advisors can help you--whether you’re an institutional investor, pension fund manager, endowment fund, or high-net-worth individual--understand the complexities of this alternative investment opportunity, and show you how to use CTAs as a portfolio diversification tool that can mitigate downside risk in any market.

Review for Guide to the Successful Thesis and Dissertation 5
Excellent reference-good guide for the dissertation process- covers all applicable topics in sufficient depth. A worthwhile reference for any student working on their thesis or dissertation
Great strenths, some weaknesses4
This book is designed for both students and faculty, so it spends a lot of time giving advice to both sides. That is the primary reason for the length.
Coverage is very thorough for the political and social aspects of dissertation writing, probably more so than in any other book. Choosing a topic is also well covered. The main weakness is in specifics of producing the document, e.g. how to write the literature review or present the methodology.
This book should definitely be on the shelf of any faculty, but a student may do better to look it over in the library. A good, concise treatment of the disseration process is Davis & Parker.
A practical guideline for success!5
As someone who works privately with students, helping them with theses and dissertations, I highly recommend this book. When students call me in regard to assistance with their thesis or dissertation, I recommend that they buy this book and use it as a reference. As the title states, this book offers practical guidelines for success, enabling students to get through the thesis or dissertation process as smoothly as possible. It is one of the most practical guideline for writing a thesis or dissertation that I have come across.

All Bow Down And Hail Ben Hart...5
This brilliant book is destined to become a literary classic of the higest regards. This is deep psychological marketing at its best. How would you like to know what emotion to tap in your sales copy that will double your sales? Or what about the most effective way to start your sales letter? How about a money phrase that I have personally used to increase my sales by 20%? It's all packed into this power house of a book.
This book goes far beyond just direct mail marketing, which frankly I have little interest in, and taps into something much deeper: the human. Ben shows you how the basic marketing principles on how to exploit human nature go all the way back to Jesus Christ and the Bible. He goes on to make the point that the basic laws of marketing have existed for over 2,000 years and that they will never change because they are based on needs and desires of humans.
This flies in the face of college courses that teach culture diversity and that we are all different. Nonsense! Ben shows the doorway to what we all have in common, and then drives a Mac truck right through it with the sample sales copy he provides you. You simply adapt his sales copy to your needs and be prepared to start handling all the orders that come rolling in. Every master marketer needs to have this book.

Good for the head and the heart5
I didn't grasp many of the technicalities pertaining to system trading (I don't trade or aspire to trade mechanical systems) but it is a wealth of generalized trading knowledge nonetheless. It is an inspiring book and a great confidence builder for me, confirming that I am on the right track regarding discipline and psychology and that, with persistence, success will come.
Psychology + Methods = a winning combination!5
The book is written in a clear, direct language - the author speaks to you, not at you. While leafing through a pile of trading books, I was stopped it in my tracks when I opened this volume. I got out my yellow highlighter and read attentively from cover to cover, taking notes. The author's unique approach was to combine traders' psychology with different types of trading; this book showed me something new about myself and other traders.
Weissman begins by explaining why "...natural and comfortable trading, using entry levels as reference points, ensures small profits and large losses. We need to reprogram ourselves to be comfortable with the unknowable and uncertain future. It helps to remind ourselves that the entry level is significant to us alone and that the sense of discomfort we feel as the market moves into previously unknown territory is entirely subjective and illusory."
Weissman outlines the three basic trader personality types: trend-following, mean-reversion [counter-trend], and day-trading. You need to be comfortable with yourself to trade well. You need the right system for your trading personality - and the author offers a rich menu for every type of trader. The author's practical, shrewd observations hold up a psychological mirror for traders. He points out that with trend-trading, just a few trades account for the bulk of profits, which means you cannot take time off from mechanical trend trading. Mean-reversion traders capitalize on temporarily unsustainable levels of euphoria or panic; they need an especially strong discipline not to overstay positions. Day-trading is labor-intensive, demands quick-mindedness and frequent vacations to avoid burnout.
The author shows how to test trend-following and mean-reversion (counter-trend) systems, as well as day-trading systems. He deals in depth with the benefits and pitfalls of system development and price risk management.
"Successful trading entails fighting natural inclinations toward comfort, security, impatience, perfection, fear, and greed. We can never control the markets, only how much risk we will assume in them." Weissman stresses the importance of keeping a trading journal. He confirms something that very few people appreciate - that at a very high end systematic and discretionary trading have a great deal in common.
Weissman's gentle but persistent insistence on both knowing yourself and stepping out of your comfort zone can have unusual results. In my case, it led me to develop a semi-mechanical system for day-trading e-minis!

This is a well written concise book. Of course if you are looking for the 'holy grail' of trading you won't find it here...
That is for you to find and that idea pretty much sums up the true intention of this book.

Currency Trading for Dummies5
The book is awesome. Even dumb like me eager to move forward from pages to pages. Really good start for dummies :)
Currency Trading For Dummies5
This is the book that every Forex trader new and experienced should have in their library. I have been trading on an off for a couple of years and learned more by reading this book in a couple of weeks than I learned reviewing info from dozens of sources. The authors are outstanding and experts in their field and I now am better armed to do battle in the forex market.
The best begginer book out there5
Cheap, easily read, more thorough than any other introduction I've seen. Not the last book you'll ever need, but definitely the best choice for your first. Everybody says to pair it with technical analysis for dummies, but nobody mentions economics for dummies. By all means get all 3, but if you only want 2 go with economics for dummies. It will leave you much more enlightened about fundementals than Technical Analysis for dummies will do for you with technicals. And unless you're going to go all the way with TA, don't go there at all. You're better off just trading news.

Preface
"Men wanted for hazardous Journey. Small wages. Bitter cold. Long months of complete darkness. Constant danger. Safe return doubtful. Honor and recognition in case of success."1
This book is the result of an eight-year "hazardous journey" for the truth about Trend Following. It fills a void in a marketplace inundated with books about finance and trading but lacking any resource or, for that matter, practically any reference to what we believe is the best strategy to consistently make money in the markets. That strategy is known as Trend Following:
When it is a question of money, everyone is of the same religion.
Voltaire
"Let's break down the term 'Trend Following' into its components. The first part is 'trend.' Every trader needs a trend to make money. If you think about it, no matter what the technique, if there is not a trend after you buy, then you will not be able to sell at higher prices . . . 'Following' is the next part of the term. We use this word because trend followers always wait for the trend to shift first, then 'follow' it."2
Trend Following seeks to capture the majority of a trend, up or down, for profit. It trades for profits in the major asset classes—stocks, bonds, currencies, and commodities. However simple the basic concepts about Trend Following are, they have been widely misunderstood. Our desire to correct this state of affairs is what, in part, launched our research. We wanted to be as objective as possible, so we based our writing on the available data:
Trend followers' month-by-month performance histories.
* Trend followers' published words and comments over the last 30 years.
* News accounts of financial disasters.
* News accounts of the losers in those financial disasters.
* Charts of markets traded by trend followers.
Charts of markets traded by losers in the financial disasters.
Education rears disciples, imitators, and routinists, not pioneers of new ideas and creative geniuses. The schools are not nurseries of progress and improvement, but conservatories of tradition and unvarying modes of thought.
Ludwig von Mises
If we could have developed a book comprised of only numbers, charts, and graphs of Trend Following performance data, we would have. However, without any explanation, few readers would have appreciated all of the ramifications of what the data showed. Therefore our approach to writing Trend Following became similar to the one Jim Collins describes in Good to Great, in which a team of researchers generated questions, accumulated data in their open-ended search for answers, and then energetically debated it.
Trend followers we studied form a sort of underground network of relatively unknown traders who, except for an occasional article, the mainstream press has virtually ignored. What we have attempted to do is lift the veil, for the first time, on who these enormously successful traders are, how they trade, and what is to be learned from their approach to trading that we might apply to our own portfolios.
Trend Following challenges much of the conventional wisdom about successful trading. We were determined to avoid being influenced by knowledge institutionalized and defined by Wall Street. We were adamant about fighting "flat earth" thinking. During our research, we tried to avoid starting with an assumption and then finding the data to support it. Instead we asked the question and then, objectively, doggedly, and slowly, let the answer reveal itself.
If there was one factor that motivated us to work in this manner, it was simple curiosity. The more we uncovered about trend followers, the more we wanted to know. For example, one of our earliest questions was who profited when Barings Bank collapsed in 1995. Our search unearthed Barings Bank–related performance data including that of trend follower John W. Henry (now the majority owner of the Boston Red Sox). His track record generated new questions, such as, "How did he discover Trend Following in the first place?" and "Has his approach changed in any significant way in the past 20 years?"
We were also curious about who won the $1.9 billion Long Term Capital Management lost during August and September 1998. We wanted to know why the biggest banks on Wall Street would invest $100 billion in an options pricing model, Nobel prize–winning or not. Further, considering what mutual fund managers have lost in the past few years and what successful trend followers have earned during the same time period, we could not understand why so few investors know anything about Trend Following. We also became interested in:
The important thing in science is not so much to obtain new facts as to discover new ways of thinking about them.
Sir William Bragg
How trend followers win in the zero-sum game of trading.
* Why Trend Following has been the most profitable style of trading.
* The philosophical framework of trend followers' success.
* Timeless principles of Trend Following.
* The Trend Following worldview of market behavior.
Reasons why Trend Following is so enduring.
Many of the trend followers we studied are reclusive and extremely low key. Some discovered Trend Following on their own and used it to make their fortunes out of home offices. Bill Dunn, a successful trend follower who has beaten the markets for over 25 years, works out of a quiet, spartan office in a Florida coastal town. For Wall Street, this approach to trading is tantamount to sacrilege. It goes against all the customs, rituals, trappings, and myths we have grown accustomed to associating with Wall Street success. In fact, it is our hope that our profiles of trend followers will correct the public's misconception of a successful trader as a harried, intense workaholic who spends 24/7 in the labyrinth of a Wall Street trading firm, surrounded by monitors and screaming into a phone.
We've assembled the first comprehensive look at Trend Following, but this is neither a course nor the only resource you will ever need. It is to be used in conjunction with our Web site at www.trendfollowing.com. We have tried to be comprehensive with our definitions. However, if we mention an unfamiliar word, name or reference a source you haven't heard of, please go to Google (www.google.com).
Fish see the bait, but not the hook; men see the profit, but not the peril.
Chinese Proverb
We have tried to make the material accessible and interesting enough so it might give you an occasional "aha" experience. However, if you're looking for trading "secrets," you need to look elsewhere. There are none. If you're in the mood for stories about what it's like inside a typical Wall Street firm or how greedy traders sow the seeds of their destruction, like in Den of Thieves, or Barbarians at the Gate, we will not meet your needs.
To be aware how fruitful the playful mood can be is to be immune to the propaganda of the alienated, which extols resentment as a fuel of achievement.
Eric Hoffer
You may have noticed that I use "we" instead of "I" when describing the process of writing this book. That's because it could not have been written without the generosity of the traders, professors, investors, colleagues, and friends who graciously shared their wisdom and trading experiences with me. Without their support, hard work, long hours, and creativity, Trend Following would still be an ongoing hazardous journey. So if there is any "honor and recognition" to be given, it is to everyone who participated, not just the person whose name appears on the cover.

You will meet American and international traders who trade stocks, futures, and options using a variety of methods. All are normally very private, but now, thanks to their relationships with Dr. Elder, you can see exactly how these traders decide to enter and exit trades. Each chapter illustrates an entry and an exit for two trades, with comments by Dr. Elder. With this book as your guide, you can get closer to mastering the key themes of trading—psychology, tactics, risk control, record keeping, and the decision-making process. The companion Study Guide is filled with striking insights and practical advice allowing you to test your knowledge and reinforce the principles outlined in Entries & Exits.
From the Back Cover
These 101 questions, including twenty-five case studies, will challenge you to master the essential aspects of successful trading. Be sure to work through this companion volume to Entries & Exits: Visits to Sixteen Trading Rooms before you risk a dollar in the markets.
Each of the seven chapters in this Study Guide for Entries & Exits—Organization, Psychology, Markets, Trading Tactics, Money Management & Record-Keeping, Case Studies, and Traders Speak—covers a major area of trading. Every chapter includes a rating scale, allowing you to measure your competence level. Now, you can discover and fill dangerous gaps in your knowledge without risking any money.
The comments in the back of the book provide detailed explanations of the right and wrong answers to the multiple-choice questions. A large number of those questions and the case histories in this Study Guide were contributed by the traders interviewed in Entries & Exits, combining both books into a single, powerful tool for developing effective trading skills.
Use Dr. Elder's Study Guide together with Entries & Exits to learn how to make the most of market opportunities.

Biased news stories spun by insiders to manipulate options prices…Questionable stocks pushed by analysts so their trading departments can unload bloated inventories … Quick-trigger day traders chasing the latest chat room buzz …
Today’s top market players understand that our "efficient" markets are actually highly inefficient, driven by insiders with hidden agendas and an irrational pack mentality that has little to do with underlying value. Fortunately, this constant imbalance generates repeated, high-probability trade setups—and Alan Farley’s The Master Swing Trader reveals how you can find and profit from these difficult-to-spot opportunities before they disappear.
Farley’s innovative system is based on Pattern Cycles—shifting market stages that repeat in an orderly, predictable process through all price charts and time frames. These classic Pattern Cycles:
* Describe the machine language within market opportunity
* Reveal the origin of the trade setup
* Explain how to capitalize on inefficiency through every bull and bear phase
* Show exactly where to uncover consistent profit opportunities
* Offer natural methods to shift tactics quickly as conditions change
* Predict the impact of the emotional crowd on trend, range, and price development
The Master Swing Trader will help you apply Pattern Cycles to your advantage, over and over again. By encompassing virtually all market action, and revealing how price moves in a highly predictable manner, its powerful tools will give you the edge you need to take other people’s money before they take yours.
In today’s lightning-fast markets, open information makes profit opportunities decidedly more difficult to spot and capitalize upon—with the investing herd becoming far more skilled at spotting inefficiencies and closing them up quickly. The Master Swing Trader will teach you to recognize these trade setups one step ahead of the crowd, dive in for solid profits, and close out your position before the majority has even caught on.
Pattern Cycles are not easy or automatic; they require concentration, discipline, and skilled execution. But the payoff of these classic strategies is virtually unlimited. Turn to page 1 of The Master Swing Trader now, and open a new world of trading possibilities and profits—the world of the master swing trader!

A contributed work, its editors and contributing authors are among today's leading voices on the topic of commodity trading advisors and a veritable "Who's Who" in hedge fund and CTA research.
The investment potential of CTAs is undeniable, yet little has been done to study their performance in detail–until now.
Divided into four comprehensive sections–Performance; Risk and Managed Futures Investing; Managed Futures Investing, Fees, and Regulation; and Program Evaluation, Selection, Diversification, and Returns–this unique resource contains articles that cover a wide range of CTA issues, including:
* The performance of CTAs in changing market conditions
* Simple and cross efficiency of CTAs using data envelopment analysis
* The effect of large hedge fund and CTA trading on futures market volatility
* Measuring the long volatility strategies of managed futures
* Managed futures funds and other fiduciary products
* Choosing the right CTA
Filled with in-depth insights and practical advice, Commodity Trading Advisors can help you–whether you’re an institutional investor, pension fund manager, endowment fund, or high-net-worth individual–understand the complexities of this alternative investment opportunity, and show you how to use CTAs as a portfolio diversification tool that can mitigate downside risk in any market.
