"Nobody, at any level, should be allowed to have anything to do with advertising until he has read this book seven times" -- David Ogilvy
Customer Reviews

Scientific Advertising , by Claude Hopkins5
I've always as more than 40 years professional in direct marketing and advertising cited Hopkins. This 2008 edition of his book from 1925 was the opportunity to meet "personally" the master.
It is a must for all that want do work in this trade, especially in the web!!!

Before you purchase you must know...4
Before you purchase this book, you must know that it was written so long ago that the english used is, well... old school for lack of a better cliche.

With that being said, this is the book that started marketing. Before this book and Claude Hopkins, there was no discipline called marketing. So you have to give the man the respect he deserves. In his day, Claude Hopkins revolutionized the world with his ideas on marketing. In particular, he created the science of marketing by applying the scientific principle to advertising. The very definition of marketing which is the ability to quantify and measure your advertising efforts (if you aren't measuring how well your ads are doing then you are not doing marketing at all but instead PR) came from this man, in this book.

If Claude Hopkins was alive today, he would absolutely dominate Internet marketing.

Yes, the concepts are way dated. Yes, the english used is hard to understand and follow at certain points. No, this book will not cause your sales to triple by giving you an easy, step by step roadmap to follow. But does that mean it isn't worth reading? I think not. Anyone who is on a quest to become a master marketer must buy this book. As the cliche goes, if you don't know where you've been, then how do you know where you are going?

From the author of Internet Marketing-Profits That Lie Hidden In Your Website: How To Triple Your Web Sales In 25 Days

A classic that can be applied to online marketing5
This book is great! I read it cover to cover and found many good techniques and strategy's that i applied to PPC marketing.

I Like the Systematic Approach4
Like many of us running small businesses, I have no choice but to come up with ads, brochures, press releases, etc. myself. This book gives me a systematic way of doing so, and I credit it with saving me a lot of money in missteps. If you follow the guidelines and checklists carefully, you will probably produce advertising and promotional material that at the very least avoids being amateurish, and will probably sell some products. I like that it concisely gives an overview over each of the areas of advertising and promotion. It explains insider terms without being condescending. Any Gripes? If I could afford the "test" runs of 5000 mailing pieces before I made my "real" mailing of many times that, I wouldn't be reading this book now would I?! But I am probably making excuses for not following their advice on testing advertising, and would be better off if I followed it. The book has been a great help in building my business, and I consult it frequently.

Very good for the novice4
This book holds your hand every step of the way, The information is well presented and helpful.

What Clients Love: A Field Guide to Growing Your Business

Amazon.com
In What Clients Love, marketing maven Harry Beckwith offers valuable lessons about capturing and keeping clients. (As Beckwith puts it, "Competence gets firms into the game that relationships win.") Using snappy examples from Absolut Vodka, Kinko’s, Starbucks, and Ian Schrager’s boutique hotels, he organizes his advice by describing four significant social trends that shape client needs and loyalty. Beckwith’s strategies for coping with information overload focus on getting to the point--using a shorter sell and fewer superlatives. He makes a clever and convincing case for giving both testimonials and blurbs the death penalty. He details the decline of client trust with a plan to eliminate cold calls, dress for success, and a spot-on critique of PowerPoint ("Lincoln had no slides at Gettysburg.") Other chapters explore the limits of the Internet and offer nongimmicky ideas about creating a brand, including 20 questions for choosing a name for your business. Beckwith’s advice is fresh, funny, and strategic. He is a master of anecdote and metaphor whose examples range from television’s Sex and the City to nihilistic philosopher Nietzsche. Yet the book’s clarity is sometimes undermined by its too clever formatting. It's best to enjoy its wisdom one chapter at a time, over coffee. Consider it the caffeine in your cup. --Barbara Mackoff

From Publishers Weekly
The author of Selling the Invisible tries to top that book's bestselling success with this breezy collection of one- to two-page friendly lecturettes on how to keep your business profitable. He might just do so, as it's difficult to imagine a book better suited in format to harried executives: they could gulp down the entire volume over the course of a single flight. Beckwith has somehow also managed to take a format where so many authors have tried and failed, and written a useful, direct and even at times inspiring book. In this age of information overload, Beckwith pulls some valuable lessons out of the bygone days of the 1970s, when, he says, consumers had infinitely fewer products and services to choose from, but seemed generally happier. Other valuable lessons for today's hard-charging businessperson include: "Hard sales lose business," "No superlatives" and, in order to understand how to run a successful business, "Study Starbucks." Beckwith is even able to take a simple thing like a name-e.g., Kinko's-and show how that chain was able, through its name (although the ubiquity of its open all-day-and-night locations didn't hurt), to crush the competition, whose names all sounded alike (e.g., InstyPrint, SpeedyPrint, etc.). Pocket-sized and packed with nuggets of wisdom, this is a rare winner in a glutted field.

Juicing the Orange: How to Turn Creativity into a Powerful Business Advantage

From Publishers Weekly
In a vivid look at some of the most creative and successful ad campaigns of the last 25 years, the founders of Fallon Worldwide chronicle the ways that "creative leverage"-the "daily practice of making creativity actionable and accountable for changing consumer behavior"-to bear in high-stakes, enterprise-critical situations. In doing so themselves, Fallon and Senn have helped clients capture markets, redefine consumer perceptions, and recover from disaster-all while generating enormous revenue. Citibank's "life is more than just money" aphorisms, United Airlines' animated vignettes, Holiday Inn's campy one liner, and Lee Jean's ironic hipster mascot, Buddy, demonstrate how fearless commitment to the creative approach finds the market sweet spot others missed. Each chapter treats a single campaign in depth, building as it progresses toward a complete working definition of creative leverage. The self-promotion of the introduction may put some readers off, but it is short-lived; the rest of the book drops the bragging and allows the campaigns to speak for themselves. Specialists in marketing and advertising will find the book appealing, and professionals of all stripes should find it useful. But general readers interested in going behind the scenes of these memorable campaigns-or of ad work in general-will find much to enjoy here.

Advertising Age, by Randall Rothenberg, August 6, 2006
"…a newly mature approach to advertising...passionately committed to the primacy of the idea,...coolly analytical and fiercely results-driven."

Houston Chronicle
In Juicing the Orange, Pat Fallon and Fred Senn offer insight leveraging the elusive quality of creativity in measurable ways.

Chicago Tribune
...they show how to leverage brand and image across categories. The result: More juice from the orange.

The Boston Globe, November 12, 2006
"...the authors are candid...and show us the practicalities of assembling a brilliant ad campaign."

Product Description
Too many companies think creativity means throwing money into marketing efforts and giving lip service to "out of the box" thinking. But such efforts rarely have a positive impact on the bottom line. Pat Fallon and Fred Senn argue that leaders have more creativity within their organizations than they realize--but they inadvertently stifle it or channel it in ineffective ways. Juicing the Orange outlines a disciplined approach to building creativity actively into the organizational culture and leveraging that creativity into campaigns that deliver measurable results. Drawing from 25 years of successful marketing and acclaimed, award-winning work, the authors show that bankable, creative ideas come from zeroing in on the one key business problem that must be solved and then rigorously unearthing insights that will lead to a spectacular solution. Behind-the-scenes stories of successful and failed campaigns for companies in diverse industries reveal the core secrets of training for creativity: develop a proprietary brand emotion, offer big ideas without a big budget, and get customers to seek out your message. Illustrating the link between creativity and profits, Juicing the Orange helps industry players measure their success at the cash register.

The on-line trading revolution is transforming the investment world at a dizzying speed. In a single year, between April 1998 and April 1999, the number of trading accounts opened on-line in the United States increased 25 percent, rising to over six million. At the beginning of the year 2000, over 8 million on-line accounts exist. The potential growth rate for on-line accounts is startling, given that they comprise fewer than 10 percent of all brokerage accounts.

CNBC reported that a majority of day traders go broke within their first six months of trading. Active day traders are responsible for 30 percent of the million-plus on-line trades executed daily. The combination of the huge number of Americans who are trading on-line and the high expected failure rate for beginners results in a potential powder keg: In the first years of the new millennium, more Americans will lose money day trading than ever before. There is a national need for an all-encompassing, simple, and effective day trading guide; thus, The Market Maker's Edge.

Day traders have been around since the inception of the stock market in 1792. Human beings have speculated on prices since the dawn of currency, and this trend will continue regardless of the state of the market.

Public interest, demand, and participation in day trading increased dramatically during the roaring bull market of the 1990s. Higher rates of return, advances in technology, ease of entry provided by on-line brokers that charge lower commissions, and a public that cannot afford to retire have all contributed to the explosion in ownership and interest in the stock market. Almost 50 percent of the American public had some sort of equity ownership in 1999. The majority of these investors and traders have unrealistically high expectations of the amount of money they can expect to receive from their investments, creating a need for education.

Many of the principles behind profitable day trading are simple. Yet time and again, people tend to complicate the decision-making process due to a number of factors, both internal and external.

Day trading magnifies the emotional pitfalls people face in everyday life, including greed, fear, attachment, shame, regret, and the search for security. These emotional and psychological traps that I call the internal factors are the most common causes of financial loss in the trading world.

To be successful, every trader needs an effective trading plan. The best plans are simple and comprehensive, addressing external factors such as risk control, entry and exit, technical and fundamental analysis, trend spotting, and trading tactics.

This book stands out from most books on trading in that it places special emphasis on both the internal and external factors. It is also unique because it is written from the perspective of the sell side of the trading world, shedding light on tactics and methods used by professional Wall Street traders.

The information that has not been readily available to the public is what market makers actually do, and what makes many of them effective day traders. Day traders have all sorts of misconceptions about market makers' roles and objectives. Market makers are incorrectly stigmatized as the enemy of day traders, when in fact the main enemies of day traders are day traders themselves.

Market makers come in all shapes and sizes. They range from small retail order flow shops that do not put up any risk capital, to the largest institutional global banks that consistently take large risk to facilitate order flow. Institutional market makers' strengths lie in their experience and technical expertise. One advantage they enjoy is that they understand the way that order flow works. Large buyers or sellers always leave traces through their activity. Their activity is visible to all who know how and where to look for it. The Market Maker's Edge helps to clarify this activity, providing traders who lack market making experience with information about how order flow works. This book sheds light on a simple way to take advantage of identifying short-term trends emanating from volume.

Another advantage market makers have over day traders is their large financial backing, which permits them to expand their risk profiles in order to withstand larger losses. The large global banks that have market making operations have the deepest pockets. A $10,000 loss may be large to a day trader, but to an institutional market maker it is simply the cost of doing business. Day traders can make up for their lack of large financial backing with proper risk control and realistic expectations, both of which they will learn about in this book.

Day traders who are in the early stages of development have to overcome their lack of experience, which is often only acquired either by learning what not to do or by making mistakes. This process can be very expensive, more so than many can afford. The Market Maker's Edge provides guidance in the form of a step-by-step process for developing and maintaining a diligent risk profile, which will help beginning day traders to weather the initial storm.

Information used to be a commodity that the top market makers enjoyed as a result of having well-endowed research departments. The Internet has broken down the information barrier between global banks and individual investors. The best research is now easily accessible on the Internet for all to see. Sometimes market makers are the last ones to catch wind of important information that is released on the Internet.

The Market Maker's Edge will teach you how to trade with the best market makers, not against them. You will become adept at overcoming short-term gyrations by sticking to the methods and tactics provided in this book. The Market Maker's Edge will help you overcome fears or weaknesses by developing successful trading habits and focusing on your strengths. Your conviction and staying power will increase and you will become a better trader, less susceptible to the influences that are outside of your control.

Lovemarks: The Future Beyond Brands

Amazon.com
Sellout "Brand" or just plain "Bland"? In Lovemarks, advertising giant Saatchi & Saatchi CEO Kevin Roberts delves deep into what mysteries lie behind the long-term success and unwavering customer loyalty for a can of Coke or a pair of Levi's, ultimately concluding that Love is the answer, and without some emotional connection to a product, it will dry up like a generic raisin in the sun. Enter Lovemarks, the new marketing buzzword, which will likely be bandied about at board meetings as vigorously as The Tipping Point.

But before Roberts can get to what in fact a Lovemark means in the worlds of advertising and marketing, he takes us on a virtual tour of his CV. There was his first post at Mary Quant in London, then the gig as New Products Manager of Gillette International in the Middle East, on to CEO of Pepsi in Canada, and later the same role at Lion Nathan in New Zealand. The list goes on, and so does Roberts--on and on--about his achievements and experience building brand awareness and shaking things up (he famously machine-gunned a vending machine at a presentation for a spot on the evening news). More importantly, he succeeds at blasting away the smoke and mirrors that might prevent a creative genius (or an ordinary consumer) from seeing what makes Superman the most beloved super-hero of all time.

Despite the somewhat egocentric approach to taking us there (he is, after-all, a pretty smart guy), we arrive at Roberts's point beautifully, and see what he sees: "That human attention has become our principle currency." And that, in these times, forming long-term emotionally charged relationships with customers is the only way to make a product weather the long haul. And while Roberts speaks to us in a spirited, conversational manner (that makes Lovemarks a pleasure to read), the design of the book seems to work against him, as convoluted typography and a general lack of layout consistency give the book a visually amateurish look. --Christene Barberich --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Publishers Weekly
Roberts, the New York-based CEO Worldwide of Saatchi & Saatchi, believes that his Love brand will change businesses, and this boldly designed volume showcases his argument that through Love, business will connect more deeply with consumers. "I was born an optimist," Roberts begins. "I always looked for opportunities where others faced up to threats or weaknesses. I believed if you were going through hell the only option was to keep going!" And that sentiment runs throughout his book, which weaves his personal history with his brand-making philosophy. While the layout is eye-catching, the text often reads like advertisement pull-outs: e.g. "the power of the edge is one of today’s most compelling ideas" and "to be out front can be lonely and uncomfortable, but remember, the lead husky gets the best view." In the end, it’s ad-folk who will glean most from this volume.

Being Aggressive and Confident as You Market for Free

You can be a high-energy marketer, and you can do it for free. Your
marketing can propel you to gloriously high profits, and you can do it for free.
You can become well known for your nonstop, clearly visible marketing, and
you can do it for free.
If you can produce a circular at the cost of a dime, that's not free
and has no place in this book. If you can run a newspaper ad for only five
bucks, that's not free either. So you won't be reading about it in the
upcoming pages.
In fact, the only money you'll have to spend is money you've
probably invested already. That means you'll need a telephone, a computer,
a printer, a supply of plain paper, access to the Internet, and business cards.
If you have those, you can toss away your checks, file away your credit
cards, put your cash into a piggy bank, and still market like a tiger. Or rather,
a guerrilla.
You're a guerrilla. That means you know what marketing can and
cannot do. It means you realize the importance of marketing to your bottom
line. It means you understand the vital need to maintain visibility and market
with all your might. But not with all your money. Not with any of your money.
Guerrilla marketing for free is powerfully effective even though it
costs you nary a cent. It can cause the competition to quake in their Nikes,
even if they're spending advertising money as though it's going to expire. It
wins customers, maintains their loyalty, builds a business, and increases—
never decreases —your bank account.
Too good to be true, right? But it is true. Even more remarkable is
the fact that the vast majority of your competitors haven't a clue that they can
market so formidably without spending money. Even when they become
increasingly aware of your marketing and your success, they still won't have
a clue that you're doing it all for free. Unless you tell them or they discover
this book, they'll remain clueless while you frolic about in clover. Well, not
exactly frolic, because you don't really get good stuff without hard work. But
your entire opinion, degree of control, and satisfaction with the process of
marketing will be transformed once you discover—then cash in on— the
abundance of free marketing options in these pages and in your future.
You're not going to learn any gimmicks or shady ways to attract
customers and prospects. You're not going to be given a cornucopia of
complex tasks. You're not going to be served up tactics that will make you
feel like a pioneer. We all know that pioneers get arrows in the back of the
neck, so your selection here of no-cost tactics is limited to those that have
proven themselves in battle and can't hurt anyone except those who would
dare to compete with a guerrilla.
Because you can rely on tactics that have consistently earned
profits in the past, you can feel optimistic about how they'll work for you.
Ideally, you'll get into the habit of marketing, making it as much a part of your
daily routine as flossing.
Some of the one hundred free tactics you can use are things,
such as marketing plans and testimonials. Some are places, such as
Internet chat rooms and community bulletin boards. Others are concepts,
such as competitive advantages and sales training. Some are attitudes, like
aggressiveness and flexibility. Still others are people, such as fusion
marketing partners and satisfied customers. Many are hard to categorize,
such as viral marketing and speeches for community clubs.
But they all have five things in common:
They take your time.
They must be done right.
They require energy—mostly, but not exclusively,
mental.
They are deceptively simple.
They earn profits for guerrillas. Always have. Always
can.
Instead of making money your prime marketing asset, this book is
devoted to using your marketing enlightenment, your intensity, your
assertiveness, and your resourcefulness. None of those attributes cost you
anything. But they give you marketing firepower that money can't buy.
You can and should utilize many of these tactics at the same
time. But you never should feel as though you've got too much going on.
Guerrillas are rarely in a hurry and proceed at a pace that keeps them in total
control even with a lot going on. Because their marketing efforts all follow a
plan and a calendar, guerrilla marketing for free makes order out of chaos and
profits out of effort.
Guerrillas strive for conventional goals and attain them through
unconventional means. Guerrilla marketing sets profits as the goal and
provides a plethora of overlooked yet industrial- strength strategies to attain
them. You hold in your capitalistic hands an even more unconventional
method of marketing —going at it full bore without spending money.
Be assured, this is not your father's marketing. This is marketing
that will enable you to make drastic reductions in your budget while
developing a fiery aura as a business owner. I sure hope that all my own fire
and enthusiasm is making you eager to get started. Getting started is half
the battle. Continuing with it is the other half.
But take a deep breath and hang back a bit before you begin. I've
devoted the entire next chapter to the tactics you must bring to life before
you start to market for free. I want you to know where you're heading and
what you want to get for yourself. I want you to aim for both profits and
balance in your life. These tactics are not presented solely to fill your vault.
They are also designed to free up some of your time for things other than
business, other than profits, other than marketing. Life comes first. Business,
profits, and marketing are further down the list.
Now that we're clear on priorities, let's get back to what you must
do before you flex your marketing muscles. As I demonstrate in chapter 2,
knowing your destination is a crucial part of your marketing journey. Moving
at the right pace is another. You must be clear on key marketing insights to
be successful. Before taking one step into the fabled land of free marketing,
you must know certain characteristics of your prospects and customers and
of your business—beyond what it says on your card. Just as a wagon needs
four wheels to move forward, you're going to need four wheels too. In guerrilla
marketing the four wheels are a name, a niche, a theme, and a meme.
Armed with the intellectual inventory you need to make before you launch
your free foray, you're poised for action. But wait! There's more.
Chapter 3 tells you what you must know while you market for free.
Besides the knowledge you need to acquire before you begin your marketing
assault, you've got to conduct that assault knowing your goals, your market,
and certainly some fundamental details about your customers.
As people are finding out, sometimes a bit too rudely, the age of
the lone-wolf business owner is over—gone with the wind and the innocence.
A vast number of potential allies are waiting to combine forces with you. But
where in the world will you find them? Look no further than chapter 4, whose
pages are loaded for bear with allies who can help you market, who want to
help you market, and who will help you market. Enlisting their aid is
paramount. Paying them is unnecessary. Think of all your customers and
you'll begin to realize that there are allies all around you.
Once you're armed to launch your program and know what to do
while it's under way, you must decide where all of this no-cost, high-energy
marketing is going to take place. Chapter 5 is where you'll survey the terrain,
get a fix on the geography, and zero in on the bull's-eyes. It's reassuring to
know there's more than one. This chapter is chock-full of bull's-eyes, along
with weapons to help you score them—zero-cost ways to market the right
way in the right places.
With the basics in place, you'll be ready to get into the nitty-gritty
of marketing for free. Chapter 6 teems with fine points and details on just that
topic. It shines a bright light on your community, your target audiences, the
Internet, trade shows, and a whole lot more.
Just when you're thinking it's time to start engaging in serious
guerrilla marketing for free, chapter 7 counsels and encourages you to give
things away for free. Pretty astonishing that you can market for free while
giving things away. Don't the things you give away cost money to buy? Nope.
This book is called Guerrilla Marketing for Free, so the tactics don't cost you
a penny, not even the tactics that call for you to be as generous as the rich
uncle you wish you had. One of the most power-packed and effective tactics
is free consultations. How much money does that cost you? None. Better
question: How much money can that earn for you?
Chapter 8 is about you—and the personality characteristics I'm
hoping you already have that will help your marketing for free pay rich
dividends. Truth be told, if you lack these traits, you may need a personality
transplant.
Chapter 9 is about actions you must take to capitalize on the time
you'll spend reading this book. If you don't take them, you probably shouldn't
be reading this.
Okay, let's stop talking about you and talk instead about the
people who will be your customers. This is the twenty-first century, and they
are a more demanding lot than their predecessors. But if you're a guerrilla,
you can meet and exceed their demands by understanding what it is they
want. One...

Guerrilla Marketing Weapons: 100 Affordable Marketing मेथोड्स

From Library Journal
In a sequel to his Guerrilla Marketing ( LJ 2/15/84) and Guerrilla Marketing Attack ( LJ 3/15/89), Levinson offers a practical approach to his technique. He defines a weapon "as a method of communication or contact with customers and prospects designed to render service, improve quality, clarify benefits, enhance credibility, or make the customer or prospect feel good." Weapons studied include pricing, brand-name awareness, follow-up, speed, neatness, and credibility. This very practical guide should be consulted by both practitioners and students of business. All three books are recommended to public libraries with comprehensive business collections.

Waiting for Your Cat to Bark?: Persuading Customers When They Ignore Marketing [BARGAIN PRICE]

From Publishers Weekly
The Eisenberg brothers (Call to Action: Secret Formulas to Improve Online Results) dub the guiding principles behind their marketing consultancy "Persuasion Architecture," but their methods have more in common with Hollywood screenwriting. Observing that one message no longer fits every audience, they create "personas" representing broad consumer patterns, based on the types identified in the Keirsey personality tests, renamed here as "methodical," "spontaneous," "humanistic" and "competitive" shoppers. Then the authors "storyboard" marketing scenarios guiding each type to the point of sale. Although 20th-century advertising was based on the Pavlovian model of instilling a desired reaction to stimuli, like the dog that expected dinner whenever a bell rang, the Eisenbergs say that increasing media fragmentation prevents advertisers from creating that sort of conditioned response. Anyway, they add, people have always been more like cats, occasionally distractable but for the most part independent-minded. Their solution—developing interactive relationships—is fairly standard in contemporary marketing circles, but by keeping the message simple, with short chapters low on jargon and high on real-world examples, the Eisenbergs just may push themselves to the front of the crowd.
